Optional stops, time permitting:
- Mount Of Beatitudes - According to Christian tradition and the New Testament, this is where Jesus delivered the “Sermon on the Mount,” outlining his key teachings. At the summit are a monastery, church, Franciscan nuns’ hostel, garden, and a farm belonging to the Italian mission in Israel. The church, built between 1936 and 1938 by architect Antonio Berlozzi, is octagonal, symbolizing the eight “blessed” verses from Jesus’ sermon. Its windows feature the sermon verses, and the floor around the altar has seven tablets inscribed with virtues from the sermon: hope, humility, faith, courage, justice, generosity, and wisdom. At the mountain’s base are remnants of a Byzantine church and monastery from the 4th-7th century AD.
- Tabgha - In Tabgha, there are two churches: the Church of the Multiplication, where Jesus fed 5,000 people with five loaves and two fish, and St. Peter’s Primacy/Mensa Christi, marking the spot where Jesus reinstated Peter as chief among the Apostles after preparing breakfast for them. At least one church will be visited, depending on time.
- Capernaum - As per the New Testament, Jesus made Capernaum his base for a significant period. Several apostles, including Saint Peter, his brother Andrew, James son of Zebedee, and his brother John, lived there, likely in St. Peter’s mother-in-law’s house.
- Yardenit - A picturesque site at the northernmost point where the Jordan River flows from the Sea of Galilee to the Dead Sea, offering a place for baptism. The site also features a lovely souvenir shop with Dead Sea products, jewelry, books, and Judaica items.
