The Dambulla rock, standing at a height of 160 meters, is encompassed by over 80 documented caves. The main attractions are housed within five key caves, adorned with numerous statues and artworks depicting the life of Buddha. These caves exude diverse scales and splendor. They feature four statues of different Gods and Goddesses, including Vishnu and Ganesha.
During the 1st century BCE, King Walagamba transformed these caves into a temple. After being expelled from Anuradhapura, the King found sanctuary here against attackers from South India for a span of 15 years. Once he gained back his kingdom, he devoted a temple in gratitude. Over time, additional kings made further contributions, and by the 11th century, the caves had blossomed into a significant spiritual hub. King Nissankamalla, in 1190 AD, overlaid the caves with gold and installed around 70 Buddha statues. In the 18th century, the Kandyan Kings undertook the restoration and painting of these caves.
