He built his palace atop the rock and adorned its sides with colorful frescoes. A gateway in the form of an enormous lion was constructed on a small plateau halfway up the rock. The name “Sīnhāgiri,” or Lion Rock, is derived from this structure. After the king’s death, the capital and royal palace were abandoned and later used as a Buddhist monastery until the 14th century. Sigiriya is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best-preserved examples of ancient urban planning.
