Great experience - Everything was great. There was no rush to leave a location to move to another one - we had as much time as we needed. Provided lunch was great. The guide Carlos was fun and knowledgeable. We didn’t get to the observatory, but it was because of the rain (obviously we wouldn’t be able to see any stars and there was no point in going there), not because of any fault of the tour provider.

Highly recommend Fabian's Tatacoa Desert tour! - I had an amazing time on the Tatacoa Desert tour with Fabian. Fabian is a lovely person and great fun to be with. He organised every aspect of the tour well, down to little details like getting us the perfect spot at a café to watch the sunset at the end. The desert itself is incredible and not one to miss while in the area. It was an interesting and magical tour, thank you!

Perfect day in an unique landscape - The tour was amazing. Fabian was an amazing guide who was very nice, took care of everything and has so much knowledge and passion for the area that he shared with us. The driver who joyned us the whole day was very caring and did drive safely. From beginning to end it was a perfect day in a unique landscape and the perfect activities. We especially loved the both hikes in the different areas, the break at the swimming pool and ending the day in the observatory. We could discover the area very well and had also enough breaks in between.

Magic place - 100% recommended experience where they take you to explore the beautiful Tatacoa desert and share with locals who introduce you to their culture. You should be prepared for an intermediate level hike but they also have routes that are friendlier for the whole family. Very good guides like Don Miguel, sharing through their singing and poetry, their tradition and love for the desert. If you visit Colombia you can't miss it.

A must! - There were two of us and the tour still took place. Fabian is not only a tour guide but also a hostel owner. It was a very exciting day and Fabian was one of the best tour guides I had in Colombia. He is very knowledgeable and speaks English very well. The special thing about this tour was that Fabian was flexible and adapted the tour for us.

Tatacoa Timetable - Summary: We recently completed this tour to the Tatacoa Desert and while the desert itself is a sight to behold, this tour has some areas of improvement to be enjoyable for everyone. I liked: Tatacoa Red Desert - when you eventually get there (more on that later) the desert itself is beautiful and well worth seeing. The red or 'Cusco' section in particular was incredible. Guide Positives - our guide was extremely knowledgeable, passionate about the area and spoke fluent English and Spanish to cater for the language preferences of the tour members. Areas for improvement: Itinerary - this is a very long tour, we were picked up at 7:30am and didn't get back to our hotel until after 9pm. There was so much wasted time in this tour, that could easily be refined. For example, you get picked up at 7:30am, you are taken to the meeting point at a hostel where you wait for approx 30 mins. You then drive to the town of Villavieja and wait another 15+ minutes so you can 'buy supplies', as someone who is organised I had already done this the day before. You then drive to the river for the boat tour and wait another 15+ minutes for the boat to arrive. You finally arrive to the Tatacoa Desert and for no particular reason we wait another 15+ minutes before we started our trek. After completing the grey (Los Hoyos) section of the Tatacoa, we broke for lunch. We then got taken to a swimming pool and if we didn't wish to swim, we had to wait for 1.5 hours anyway. The pool was not included in the tour prices, it was 10,000 pesos to use the pool, 3,000 pesos to hire a bathing suit and 2,000 pesos just to use the bathroom. We didn't arrive to the 'main-event' of the day, the red/Cusco section of Tatacoa until 4:30pm! This slow pace didn't suit me at all, the guide later revealed the pacing is deliberate so you finish at the observatory for stargazing, obviously it needs to be dark for this activity so they have a deliberate go-slow for the activities during the day. As it turned out, our tour was dragged out to allow the observatory visit and then we couldn't go anyway as it was cloudy. So all that time was wasted for no reason. When booking this tour, I was told the pool and observatory are optional. While that is true, I misunderstood that even though it's 'optional' if other members of the tour group want to do it, you have to sit and wait for them regardless. Organisation - after returning to the original meeting point around 9pm, there were no taxis waiting for us, so again we had to wait around for 15+ minutes. This was disappointing after a long day in the sun, we just wanted to get back to the hotel to have something to eat. Guide Negatives - as the day went on in my opinion the guide became a little condescending and sarcastic when he was asked questions about what was coming next. The default answer became 'that would be a great thing to tell the hostel, I'm just the guide'. While navigating some canyons in the grey section, he started throwing mud at us and then telling us about 'erosion' in the area. I think he meant this as a joke, but getting pelted in the head with mud was not appreciated when we were trekking on a 40+ celsius (100+ Fahrenheit) day, this was a little immature I felt. A personal pet peeve, but he also used his vape/e-cigarette while we were all in the van together, as a non-smoker I don't appreciate being exposed to any cigarette products. The driver was also on his phone showing the guide pictures of his new motorbike while he was supposed to be driving. Conclusion: I'm glad I did this tour as I wanted to see the Tatacoa Desert, I did learn a lot from the guide despite the negatives I mentioned. If you don't mind a slow pace and committing a whole day - this is a great option for you. If you prefer to just 'get on with it' this tour will frustrate you and I'd suggest seeking out a different tour operator. I would strongly suggest this operator add an 'express' option for those who just want to see Tatacoa and not all the other stuff. If that's not possible, be more transparent about the plan for the day to avoid surprises.
