Arrival in the Desert

The journey to the Tatacoa Desert began with a bit of a hiccup. Upon arrival at the departure point, I found myself standing alone, the sun already casting its warm embrace over the landscape. After a few phone calls, it became clear that a staffing change had left my booking in limbo. However, the tour company quickly arranged for a taxi to take me on my desert adventure. The driver, though not fluent in English, greeted me with a warm smile and a friendly demeanor. As we set off, the lack of air conditioning in the taxi was a small price to pay for the promise of the desert’s wonders.

The drive through the desert was a visual feast. The landscape, with its explosion of colors, seemed almost otherworldly. The tranquility and silence of the desert were a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of city life. As we approached the town center of Villavieja, I was eager to learn about its history and the stories it held.

Exploring the Desert’s Wonders

Our first stop was the cardon viewpoint, where the vastness of the desert stretched out before me. The gray desert in the region of the holes was next, and as I walked through its unique formations, I felt a deep connection to the earth beneath my feet. Miguel, our guide, joined us here. Though his English was limited, his passion for the desert was evident. He shared stories of the land, its history, and its significance, and I found myself captivated by his enthusiasm.

The natural water pool was a refreshing oasis amidst the heat of the desert. After a morning of exploration, the cool water was a welcome relief. I had come prepared with a towel, heeding the advice to dry off in the sun. As I lay by the pool, I couldn’t help but reflect on the beauty of the desert and the importance of preserving such unique ecosystems.

A Night Under the Stars

Unfortunately, the clouds persisted, and the stars remained hidden. Yet, the experience of standing in the desert, surrounded by its vastness, was a reminder of the beauty and mystery of our natural world.
