A Journey Through Cheese and Bread

Our adventure began in Lisbon, where we were greeted by our friendly guide and driver. The kids were thrilled to hop into the comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle, and I was grateful for the chance to relax and enjoy the scenic drive north to Serra da Estrela. As we traveled, our guide shared fascinating stories about the region’s history and culture, keeping the kids entertained and engaged.

Our first stop was the cheese factory in Nelas. Here, we learned about the artisanal process of crafting the famous Serra da Estrela cheese. The kids were fascinated by the traditional methods and modern techniques used in production. We even had the chance to taste the cheese, which was a hit with everyone. The distinct flavor of the Serra da Estrela cheese was unlike anything we had tried before, and we couldn’t resist purchasing some to take home.

Exploring the Bread Museum

Next, we traveled to Sabugueiro, the highest village in Portugal, nestled in the breathtaking Serra da Estrela landscape. The Bread Museum was a highlight of our trip, offering a rich history of bread-making in the region. The interactive exhibits were perfect for the kids, who loved learning about the different types of bread and the traditional baking methods.

The museum also offered a hands-on experience, allowing the children to try their hand at kneading dough. It was a joy to see their faces light up as they learned new skills and gained a deeper appreciation for the art of bread-making. The museum’s café provided a delightful break, where we enjoyed freshly baked bread and pastries.

Ascending to New Heights

Our journey continued with a scenic drive to the highest point in Continental Portugal. The views from the top of Serra da Estrela were absolutely breathtaking, and the kids were in awe of the panoramic landscapes. We took plenty of photos to capture the moment and enjoyed a leisurely walk, taking in the fresh mountain air.

On our descent, we stopped in Covilha, a city known for its historical significance in the wool industry. We had some free time to explore and enjoy a delightful meal featuring typical cuisine from the Beiras region. The local flavors and specialties were a treat for the taste buds, and the kids loved trying new dishes.

As we made our way back to Lisbon, we considered a stop in Castelo Branco to explore the art and history of embroidery. However, the kids were content with the day’s adventures, and we decided to save that for another trip. The journey back was filled with laughter and stories, as we reflected on the wonderful experiences we had shared as a family.

This trip was a perfect blend of education and fun, offering something for everyone. From the cheese factory to the Bread Museum and the stunning mountain views, it was an unforgettable experience that I highly recommend to families looking for a unique and enriching adventure.
