This thrilling journey invites you to ascend one of the renowned peaks in the Cordillera Vilcanota, the Ausangate area, and traverse a glacier plus face a brief rock-climbing challenge to reach the top of nevado Qampa.
CUSCO – TINKE – PACCHANTA – BASE CAMP
Ausangate Trek - This morning, around 7:00 am, we will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco. We will head southeast via the Interoceanic highway, passing through the city of Urcos. After about 3 hours, we will arrive in Ocongate, where you can make any last-minute purchases.
Next, we will proceed to Pacchanta, which is 45 minutes from Ocongate. Here, we will meet the muleteers and mountain cook for the expedition.
After lunch, we will begin our trek, which will take approximately 4 hours to reach the base camp. Along the way, you will enjoy stunning views of Cusco’s main snow-capped mountains, including Ausangate (6384 masl), Cayangate (6110 masl), and others, accompanied by the region’s llamas and alpacas.
At the base camp, your personal high mountain equipment (harnesses, crampons, ice axes, helmets, leggings, gloves) will be provided. Our mountain guide will instruct you on the proper use of the equipment, how to navigate a glacier, and ensure everything is ready for use when needed.
BASE CAMP – SUMMIT – BASE CAMP
Nevado Ausangate - We will depart from base camp at 3:00 am after a light breakfast. It is crucial to begin the ascent at dawn. After approximately 2 hours of climbing the moraine, you will reach the glacier, where you will gear up with the mountain equipment to traverse the glacier.
After an additional 3 hours on the glacier, you will reach the summit of Qampa mountain, which stands at 5,500 meters above sea level. You will spend about half an hour at the summit to rest and take in the breathtaking high Andean landscapes, surrounded by the snowy peaks of the Cordillera Vilcanota.
The descent back to base camp will take another 3 hours, where lunch will be waiting for you. The rest of the afternoon will be free for you to relax after a long and fulfilling day.
