This castle is built at the highest point in the region. It features a unique structure with graves, tunnels, and churches, unlike any other place in the world.
Zelve Open Air Museum - Cappadocia is a remarkable destination filled with wonders. While there are countless activities to enjoy, this article highlights one of the most extraordinary: Zelve Open Air Museum. Located near Pasabag Monks Valley between Avanos and Goreme, Zelve Valley is one of Cappadocia’s most renowned outdoor museum sites. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site where visitors can admire the pointed, detailed, and sharp fairy chimneys.
Cavusin - The next stop on the tour is an ancient Greek village. Çavusin is situated about 4 kilometers from Göreme. The old village is mostly abandoned due to rock falls. Visitors can explore the Church of John the Baptist, likely dating back to the 5th century, with paintings from the 6th, 7th, and 8th centuries. The view of Rose Valley from this village is stunning.
Pasabag - This is the ideal location to see three-headed fairy chimneys. Pasabag, also known as the Pasha’s Vineyard, is surrounded by breathtaking natural rock formations, creating a spectacular scene.
Avanos - Enjoy a 1-hour lunch at a popular and cool restaurant in the region. The meal begins with soup, followed by a self-service buffet.
Kapadokya Seramik - Since the Hittite era in 2000 BC, people have sourced red clays (terra rosa) from the Kızılırmak River, Turkey’s longest river, and white clays (kaolin) from volcanic hills. They used these clays for daily life, shaping them by hand on spinning wheels.
Sentez Avanos Hali - Rug Workshop & Store - Each carpet, with its intricate patterns, conveys a collection of messages, beliefs, and symbols. Every woven pattern represents a feeling, desire, or wish, making each carpet a living history from ancient times to the present. Women have patiently and tirelessly woven their joys and sorrows into these amazing codes and magical letters, to be read line by line.
Devrent Valley - The ruins at Devrent are spread across three valleys, featuring several pointed fairy chimneys with large stems.
Urgup - The “fairy chimneys” with caps, primarily found near Ürgüp, have a conical-shaped body topped with a boulder. The cone is made of tufa and volcanic ash, while the cap consists of a harder, more resistant rock like lahar or ignimbrite. These fairy chimneys, symbols of Ürgüp, are known as holy spirit chimneys, representing a mother, father, and son standing together.
Cappadocia
Goreme Panorama - On the second day, guests are picked up from the hotel to start the day tour. The first stop is a panoramic view of Goreme, where they receive information about the history and formation of Cappadocia while observing the fairy chimneys. Afterward, there is free time for photography.
Derinkuyu Underground City - After a 40-minute drive, guests arrive at the Underground City. Initially used by locals as a natural deep freeze, it later served as a shelter for late Romans against potential Arabian invasions. With clear explanations from the guide, visitors spend about an hour here.
Ihlara Valley - Ihlara Canyon is 52 km from the Underground City. Approximately 45 minutes later, guests reach the entrance of Ihlara Valley. Formed by volcanic activity from Mt. Hasan, the Melendiz River eroded the valley over millions of years, creating an 80-meter-deep canyon. The entire valley is 14 km long. In the past, Christians lived in various parts of the valley, carving and painting churches. Guests hike about 3.5 km, lasting 1 hour and 15 minutes, before arriving at a restaurant for lunch.
Belisirma - Enjoy a 1-hour lunch in the valley, next to the river. The meal starts with soup and salad, followed by a choice of main dishes from the menu, and concludes with seasonal fruits.
Yaprakhisar Koyu - After lunch, the guide takes guests to Yaprakhisar, a unique location with the finest examples of conical fairy chimneys. Due to its resemblance to the Star Wars film set, Yaprakhisar is known as the “Star Wars Movie Set.”
Selime Monastery - The tour continues to another movie-set-like location, Selime Monastery. Although it initially appears as a castle, the shelters, churches, chapels, bedrooms, storages, and large cathedral reveal its monastic nature. Guests learn about monastic life in Cappadocia.
Pigeon Valley - Climbing to Selime Monastery may be tiring, but guests have about an hour to rest before reaching Pigeon Valley. During the journey, the guide shares traditions, cultures, and stories about Anatolia. Upon arrival, pigeons greet guests at the top of the valley. Pigeons have always been significant to Cappadocian people, with their eggs and droppings serving various purposes. Locals carved houses for them into the valley slopes, and visitors will understand why they are called “houses” upon seeing them.
Kapadokya El Sanatları Merkezi - The final stop on the tour is a visit to an onyx factory in Uchisar. Onyx, a volcanic stone with various colors and minerals, is found in Cappadocia due to its volcanic nature. At the factory, a master provides information about onyx shaping and demonstrates the process.
Izmir - After the second day tour, guests are transferred to the airport for a flight to Izmir. Upon arrival, they are picked up from Izmir airport and transferred to their hotel.
Ephesus
Ephesus Museum - The tour continues to ancient Ephesus, where guests pass through the arched Magnesia Gate and begin a leisurely downhill walk to the ruins of the Roman provincial capital. The knowledgeable guide highlights sights such as the beautifully preserved Temple of Hadrian, the magnificent Trajan Fountain, the Odeon Theater, once used for political and entertainment purposes, and the stunning Celsus Library with its imposing façade and two-story Corinthian-style columns. The dramatic Great Theater, one of the few structures still in use today, seats twenty-five thousand and, although it once hosted gladiator games, now hosts annual spring festivals.
Meryemana (The Virgin Mary’s House) - The House of the Virgin Mary offers scenic views of the Byzantine fortress in Selcuk and the Temple of Artemis. A long and winding road provides wonderful views of the valley en route to the Shrine of St. Mary. The small house, beautifully situated in the Solmissos Mountains, is considered by the Vatican to be the final resting place of the Virgin Mary.
Selcuk - After the tour, guests are transferred to their hotel.
Pamukkale
Pamukkale - After breakfast, guests drive to Pamukkale (3 hours) and enjoy free time.
Pamukkale
Pamukkale Natural Park - The ancient Greco-Roman city of Hierapolis, now a UNESCO World Heritage site, along with Pamukkale’s famous white travertines (calcium pools), has been used as a spa since the 2nd century BCE. People have traveled great distances to soothe their ailments or retire here.
Hierapolis & Pamukkale - Guests enter Hierapolis from the North Gate, visiting the Necropolis, Bath and Basilica, Frontinius Gate, Frontinius Street, Latrina, Northern Byzantine Gate, Fountain of the Tritons, and the Temple of Apollon.
Cleopatra Pools - Guests are given free time to swim in the Cleopatra Antique Thermal Pool (admission fee extra) and conclude the Hierapolis portion of the tour with a visit to the large and well-preserved Theatre.
