Exploring Delhi (Guided Sightseeing Tour)
Red Fort - This historic monument in Delhi is named after the red sandstone used in its construction by the Mughals. Originally a ceremonial site for royalty, it continues to host political and national events. Built in 1639 by the fifth Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan as the palace of his fortified capital Shahjahanabad, the Red Fort is known for its massive red sandstone walls and is located next to the older Salimgarh Fort, constructed by Islam Shah Suri in 1546 AD. The imperial apartments feature a series of pavilions connected by a water channel called the Stream of Paradise.
Chandni Chowk - Known as Moonlight Square, Chandni Chowk is one of the oldest and busiest markets in Old Delhi, India, situated near the Old Delhi Railway Station. The Red Fort is located within this market, which was established in the 17th century by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan and designed by his daughter Jahanara. Originally divided by canals to reflect moonlight, it remains one of India’s largest wholesale markets. The market’s history dates back to the founding of Shahjahanabad when Emperor Shah Jahan built the Red Fort beside his new capital on the Yamuna River. Chandni Chowk is also a haven for food enthusiasts, offering local delicacies like Babu Ram Paranthe Wala, Old Famous Jalebi Wala, Kuremal Ki Kulfi, Natraj Dahi Bhalla, and more.
Humayun’s Tomb - This splendid garden tomb is the first significant example of Mughal architecture in India. Built in 1565 A.D., nine years after Humayun’s death, by his senior widow Bega Begam, the tomb is set within a walled enclosure featuring garden squares (chaharbagh) with pathways and water channels. The centrally located mausoleum is topped by a double dome. Several Mughal rulers’ graves are located within the enclosure, and it was here in 1857 A.D. that Lieutenant Hudson captured the last Mughal emperor, Bahadur Shah II.
Rashtrapati Bhavan - This residence of the President of the world’s largest democracy symbolizes India’s strength, democratic traditions, and secular character. Designed by Sir Lutyens, the H-shaped building covers 5 acres on a 330-acre estate. The mansion boasts 340 rooms over four floors, 2.5 kilometers of corridors, and 190 acres of gardens. Thousands of laborers, including masons, carpenters, artists, carvers, and cutters, contributed to its completion in 1929.
India Gate - Located opposite Rashtrapati Bhavan in the heart of New Delhi, the 42-meter-high India Gate is an “Arc-de-Triomphe”-like archway at a crossroads. Similar to its French counterpart, it honors the 70,000 Indian soldiers who died fighting for the British Army during World War I. The memorial lists the names of over 13,516 British and Indian soldiers killed on the North Western Frontier in the Afghan War of 1919.
Qutub Minar - This towering 73-meter-high victory tower was built in 1193 by Qutab-ud-din Aibak following the defeat of Delhi’s last Hindu kingdom. The tower features five distinct storeys, each with a projecting balcony, tapering from a 15-meter diameter at the base to just 2.5 meters at the top. The first three storeys are made of red sandstone, while the fourth and fifth are of marble and sandstone. At the tower’s base is the Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque, India’s first mosque. An inscription over its eastern gate provocatively states it was built using materials from 27 demolished Hindu temples. A 7-meter-high iron pillar stands in the mosque’s courtyard, and legend has it that encircling it with one’s hands while standing with one’s back to it will fulfill a wish.
Delhi to Agra (By Road) and Guided Sightseeing Tour
Agra - After breakfast, guests will check out from the hotel and drive to Agra. Upon arrival, they will check into a pre-booked hotel.
In the afternoon, guests will embark on a local sightseeing tour of Agra, visiting:
Agra Fort - Built by Emperor Akbar on the west bank of the Yamuna River, Agra Fort dominates the city’s center. The crescent-shaped fort features a 20-meter-high, 2.4-kilometer-long outer wall enclosing a maze of buildings that form a small city within a city. Notable sites within the fort include the Diwan-i-Aam (hall of public audience), the Diwan-i-Khas (hall of private audience), the octagonal Musamman Burj tower, Khas Mahal, Sheesh Mahal (the mirror palace), and the Anguri Bagh (the Grape Garden). The fort’s impressive red sandstone structure appears strong and invincible. While commonly believed to have been built by Mughal Emperor Akbar and further developed by his heirs, the fort was originally a small fortress constructed by a Hindu warlord around the 5th century, recognizing Agra’s strategic importance on the Yamuna River.
Agra to Fatehpur Sikri to Jaipur (By Road)
Taj Mahal - Guests will visit the Taj Mahal at sunrise. Located in Agra, this “symbol of love” was built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan as a memorial for his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Each year, more visitors than Agra’s entire population pass through its magnificent gates to glimpse this breathtaking monument. Described by Rabindranath Tagore as “a teardrop on the cheek of eternity,” the Taj Mahal is considered the finest example of Mughal architecture and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Covering over 60 bighas, the Taj Mahal was constructed using white marble from Makrana in Rajasthan.
After breakfast, guests will check out from the hotel and drive to Jaipur.
Fatehpur Sikri - En route, guests will visit Fatehpur Sikri (Visit – 120 minutes). This old deserted town of the Mughal Dynasty, built in red sandstone in honor of Saint Salim Chisti, who predicted the birth of three sons to Emperor Akbar, exemplifies robust stability combined with originality. This magnificent fortified ancient city was the Mughal Empire’s short-lived capital between 1572 and 1585 during Emperor Akbar’s reign. Akbar had previously visited the village of Sikri to consult the Sufi saint Shaikh Salim Chishti, who predicted the birth of an heir to the Mughal throne. When the prophecy came true, Akbar built his new capital here, including a stunning mosque still in use today and three palaces, one for each of his favorite wives – one Hindu, one Muslim, and one Christian (though Hindu villagers in Sikri dispute these claims).
Upon arrival in Jaipur, guests will check into a pre-booked hotel.
Exploring Jaipur (Guided Sightseeing Tour)
Amber Palace - This captivating blend of Hindu and Muslim architecture was built by Raja Man Singh on a hillside in the 16th century. Construction began in 1592 by Raja Mansingh I and was completed by his descendant Jai Singh I. While the fort’s exterior is rugged, the interiors are equally enchanting, showcasing the ultimate refinement of Hindu and Muslim architectural styles. The walls are adorned with hunting and war scenes, with precious stones and mirrors set into the plaster. The Maota Lake in the foreground provides a magnificent reflection of the fort.
Jal Mahal - Amidst Jaipur’s chaos, the serene Jal Mahal, or Water Palace, is a beautiful sight. This low-rise symmetrical palace, once a shooting lodge for the Maharajah, appears to float in the center of Sagar Lake. The light sand-colored stone walls of Jal Mahal contrast starkly with the deep blue waters of the lake, while lush foliage sprouts from within the palace.
Hawa Mahal - Palace of Wind - Located near the commercial center of the Pink City, Hawa Mahal is considered Jaipur’s landmark. Known as the ‘Palace of Winds,’ this five-story building was constructed in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh. The palace features 953 windows or ‘Jharokhas’ adorned with intricate designs. A small museum within the Hawa Mahal complex houses famous items like miniature paintings and ceremonial armor.
City Palace of Jaipur - This palace, with its beautiful architecture and cultural artwork, was once the seat of the Kings during their reign. City Palace is a complex of courtyards, gardens, and buildings situated in the center of the Old City. It is an ideal tourist destination and a must-visit due to its impressive history, architecture, gardens, and array of courtyards, housing several other buildings. Blessed with urban layout beauty, City Palace is more than just a tourist destination; it is an excellent example of design, art, and creativity, serving as an exquisite symbol.
Jantar Mantar - Jaipur - Jantar Mantar is a collection of nineteen architectural astronomical instruments built by Rajput king Sawai Jai Singh II and completed in 1734. It features the world’s largest stone sundial and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Located near City Palace and Hawa Mahal, the instruments allow the observation of astronomical positions with the naked eye. The monument showcases architectural innovations and the convergence of ideas from different religious and social beliefs in 18th-century India. The observatory exemplifies Ptolemaic positional astronomy shared by many civilizations.
