It served as the imperial mosque for the Mughal emperors until the empire’s fall in 1857. The Jama Masjid symbolized Islamic power in India well into the colonial era and held political significance during key periods of British rule. It remains an active place of worship and is one of Delhi’s most iconic landmarks, embodying the spirit of Old Delhi.
- Red Fort - The Red Fort, or Lal Qila (Hindustani: [laːl qiːlaː]), is a historic fort in Old Delhi, India, that served as the main residence of the Mughal emperors. Commissioned by Emperor Shah Jahan on May 12, 1638, when he moved his capital from Agra to Delhi, the fort was originally red and white. Its design is attributed to architect Ustad Ahmad Lahori, who also built the Taj Mahal. The Red Fort represents the pinnacle of Mughal architecture under Shah Jahan, blending Persianate palace architecture with Indian traditions.
- India Gate - The India Gate was part of the work of the Imperial War Graves Commission, established in December 1917 under British rule to build war graves and memorials for soldiers who died in the First World War.
- Rajghat Dam - Raj Ghat is a memorial dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi in Delhi, India. Originally the name of a historic ghat in Old Delhi, it was located near the Raj Ghat Gate of the walled city, opening to the west bank of the Yamuna River. The memorial area is now also referred to as Raj Ghat.

Constructed during the height of the British Empire, it was previously known as Viceroy’s House. Rashtrapati Bhavan may refer to the 340-room main building, which includes the president’s official residence, reception halls, guest rooms, and offices, or to the entire 130-hectare (320-acre) Presidential Estate, which includes gardens, open spaces, residences for bodyguards and staff, stables, and other facilities. It is the second-largest residence of any head of state in the world, after the Quirinal Palace in Italy.
- Humayun’s Tomb - Humayun’s Tomb (Persian: Maqbara-i Humayun) is the tomb of Humayun in Delhi, India. Commissioned by Humayun’s first wife and chief consort, Empress Bega Begum, in 1558, it was designed by Persian architects Mirak Mirza Ghiyas and his son, Sayyid Muhammad. As the first garden-tomb on the Indian subcontinent, it is located in Nizamuddin East, Delhi, near the Dina-panah Citadel, also known as Purana Qila. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993, it has undergone extensive restoration. The pathway leading to the main tomb includes several smaller monuments, including the tomb complex of Isa Khan Niyazi, an Afghan noble in Sher Shah Suri’s court, built in 1547 CE.
- Qutub Minar - The Qutb Minar, also spelled Qutub Minar and Qutab Minar, is a minaret and “victory tower” that is part of the Qutb complex, located at the site of Delhi’s oldest fortified city, Lal Kot, founded by the Tomar Rajputs. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Mehrauli area of South Delhi, India, and one of the city’s most visited tourist spots, mostly built between 1199 and 1220. This victory tower symbolizes the blend of traditional Islamic architecture and Southwestern Asian design. Elizabeth Lambourn’s “Islam Beyond Empires: Mosques and Islamic Landscapes in India and the Indian Ocean” explores the introduction of Islam in South Asia and its influence on Islamic religious architecture. The Qutb Minar serves as a central marker for new Muslim communities and a reminder of Islam’s presence in the region.
