The city, full of history, observed various political upheavals over centuries. Its rule passed from Mughals to Khiljis and then Tughlaqs.
In 1192, Rajput town fell into the hands of the Afghan warrior Muhammad of Ghori, leading to the birth of the Delhi Sultanate (1206). The Sultanate came to an end with Timur’s invasion in 1398; the Lodi dynasty, the last of the Delhi Sultans, conceded to Babur who laid the foundation of the Mughal Empire following the Panipat battle in 1526. Agra was initially the preferred capital for the early Mughal emperors. It was only after Shah Jahan constructed the Old Delhi walls (1638), did Delhi became the Mughal’s undeviating government seat.
