Delhi - Agra
New Delhi - Today, you will be picked up from either the Delhi airport or your hotel and driven to Agra in a private vehicle with a chauffeur. Upon arrival in Agra, you will check into your hotel.
In the afternoon, embark on a local sightseeing tour of Agra. Visit the Agra Fort, constructed by Emperor Akbar on the west bank of the Yamuna River. This crescent-shaped fort, with its 20-meter high and 2.4-kilometer long outer wall, dominates the city center and contains a maze of buildings forming a small city within. Key sites within the fort include the Diwan-i-Aam (hall of public audience), the Diwan-i-Khas (hall of private audience), the octagonal Musamman Burj tower, Khas Mahal, Sheesh Mahal (the mirror palace), and Anguri Bagh (the Grape Garden).
Later, visit one of the world’s most beautiful buildings, the Taj Mahal, located in the historic city of Agra. Known as the “symbol of love,” it was built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Each year, more visitors than the entire population of Agra pass through its magnificent gates to glimpse this breathtaking monument. Described by Rabindranath Tagore as “a teardrop on the cheek of eternity,” the Taj Mahal is considered the finest example of Mughal architecture and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Spanning over 60 bighas, the Taj Mahal was constructed using white marble from Makrana in Rajasthan.
Taj Mahal - The grandeur of the Taj Mahal makes it one of the most photographed, filmed, described, and sketched buildings in the world. It perfectly harmonizes fantasy and reality. An inspiration for countless artists over the centuries, the Taj is an ode to love, unmatched by any other monument. Its splendor and beauty draw visitors back to experience its magic. The simplicity of the Taj’s beauty is rare and captivating. Emperor Shah Jahan built many architectural marvels, but the Taj Mahal is his crowning achievement. As a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the seven architectural wonders of the world, the Taj Mahal stands apart. Shah Jahan deeply loved his wife Mumtaz, and after her death in 1631 during childbirth, he decided to build a mausoleum in her memory that the world would remember. Employing the best artisans and architects, the construction took 22 years and 20,000 workers to complete, resulting in the world’s most beautiful monument, the Taj Mahal.
Agra Fort - This magnificent structure of red sandstone appears strong and invincible. Common belief attributes its construction to Mughal Emperor Akbar, with further development by his heirs. However, the fort originally began as a small fortress built by a Hindu warlord around the 5th century, recognizing Agra’s strategic importance on the Yamuna River. When Muslim rulers took over from the Hindu kings, the small fortress was expanded into a massive fort. The Lodhis rebuilt it in the 13th century, and Mughal Emperor Akbar renovated it in 1565 A.D. Although Akbar built it for military purposes, his son Jehangir and grandson Shah Jahan transformed it into a palatial fort. The fort spans nearly 3 kilometers, with 20-foot-high walls surrounded by a water-filled moat with crocodiles. Built with red sandstone, it is considered the predecessor of Delhi’s Red Fort. Many buildings within the fort were constructed by Shah Jahan, including the stunning Pearl Mosque. The only remaining structure built by Akbar is the Jehangiri Mahal, which stands out with its dominant Hindu architecture. Shah Jahan also built the Diwan-e-Aam and Diwan-e-Khas audience halls. The Sheesh Mahal near the Diwan-e-Khas is a beautiful palace with inlaid mirror work on the walls. The Mussaman Burj, built by Shah Jahan, holds significance within the Agra Fort.
Agra - Fatehpur Sikri - Ranthambore
Agra - After breakfast, check out from the hotel and drive towards Ranthambore.
En route, visit Fatehpur Sikri, an old deserted town of the Mughal Dynasty. Built in red sandstone in honor of Saint Salim Chisti, who foretold the birth of three sons to Emperor Akbar, Fatehpur Sikri is an example of robust stability combined with originality. This magnificent fortified ancient city was the short-lived capital of the Mughal Empire between 1572 and 1585, during Emperor Akbar’s reign. Akbar had visited the village of Sikri to consult the Sufi saint Shaikh Salim Chishti, who predicted the birth of an heir to the Mughal throne. When the prophecy came true, Akbar built his new capital here, including a stunning mosque still in use today, and three palaces for each of his favorite wives – one Hindu, one Muslim, and one Christian (though Hindu villagers in Sikri dispute these claims).
Upon arrival in Ranthambore, check into the hotel. The rest of the day is free for leisure.
Fatehpur Sikri - About 40 kilometers from Agra stands Emperor Akbar’s ephemeral capital, Fatehpur Sikri, or the City of Victory. Built by Akbar in the 16th century, this beautiful city is made of brilliant red sandstone available in the area. The city is built on a hill ridge within a 5-square-kilometer area, next to a now-dry lake. The rapid construction of the city is mysterious, as is its desertion. It is said that Akbar decided to build a mosque for the Sufi saint Salim Chisti on the spot where it stands now, as a gesture of gratitude. Akbar, who had no heir, was blessed with three sons after the saint’s prophecy. As he began constructing palaces, harems, courtyards, pools, and places of public and private audience after the mosque and tomb, his ministers also built their houses around it, creating a huge city in no time.
