Highlights
  • Lake Pontchartrain - Start the tour at the designated meeting point in New Orleans and journey to the historic Whitney Plantation, one of the antebellum estates located along the Mississippi River.

You’ll cross the Bonnet Carre Spillway, a flood outlet for the river, and see a panoramic view of Lake Pontchartrain on your way to the plantation. Pass by the Evergreen, Felicity and St. Joseph plantations, where rich crops of sugar cane, cotton, and indigo from these fertile lands once traveled to various ports of trade.

  • Whitney Plantation - Arrive at the Whitney Plantation, which dates back more than 260 years and is now a working museum dedicated to the understanding of slavery in the American South. Visit museum exhibits and restored buildings including historical slave cabins, some of which remain from the original 22 on-site. See the Big House, which is one of the finest surviving examples of Spanish Creole architecture in Louisiana, and learn about the daily life of former slaves at Whitney as recorded by the Federal Writers’ Project. Great tour! - Amazing experience, on our way to and from the plantation Alton(driver) gave a great history of the city. The plantation’s self guided tour was informative and easy to use. I appreciated the self guided tour because you could pause or hear sections of the tour multiple times incase you didn’t hear something. It’s recommended to download the app but they provide a handset that looks like a phone that you can use too. I recommend bringing water and an umbrella as some parts of the tour are not shaded. In addition the tour did take about 2 hours to do. We were also allowed to leave items on the bus that we didn’t want to bring with us while at the plantation.

It was very humbling & emotional - We visited the Whitney Plantation in the beginning of August. We really wanted to visit this plantation because it narrates the history of slavery from the perspectives of enslaved people, which is very unique and different. On arrival you recieve a device that is your tour guide and as you walk around the huge plantation it tells stories of the slaves and their experiences as well as the history of the exhibit you are viewing. There are 14 different stops along the self guided tour. All transporting you back in time to learn about what happened during thst time. You have two hours to walk around the plantation to see all of the buildings, statues and exhibits, which is plenty of time to see everything. Just remember to follow the exhibit numbers that are posted in the ground and listen to the prerecorded information as you go along. The tour starts and finishes at the giftshop, which is also where there is a small museum providing more information on the history of international slavery. Once you start your tour you are given a lanyard to keep with the image and name of a child born into slavery, you can then try and find the statue of that child as you walk around the plantation. It was a very humbling and emotional experience but so worth it and I'd recommend this trip to anyone visiting New Orleans.

Whitney Plantation Tour - Had a tour of the Whitney Plantation yesterday, which was very interesting. There were self guiding hand held radios that you put in the location and you get a story about each place. It worked well. The bus tour there was amazing and a big thank you to Alton who was amazing!!! A mind of information, funny and made the trip. He also drove us past some of the other plantations and had a story on those too. Very enjoyable day. Also Whitney is more about the history of slavery and how they lived with some original slave homes, rather than looking a big house which was empty

A must see! - The exhibit was curated very well. It took you on a journey that filled in a lot of gaps for me. My daughters read everything, and left there learning more than they would have in a classroom. I appreciated the fact that it was from the slaves' perspective.

Touching - Touching and moving tour. One gets a picture of the horror of slavery in the USA. 🇺🇸 the journey of slavery from Africa to the USA is clearly understood.
