Tin Hau Temple (Tap Mun) - Ascend a set of stairs to reach the Tin Hau Temple of Tap Mun, where a stunning sea view awaits. This 400-year-old temple features an altar, and legend suggests a hidden tunnel connects it to Tap Mun Cave on the island’s opposite shore. Listen for the waves from the other side of the island! Don’t miss the intricate, century-old ceramic sculptures adorning the temple’s roof.
-
Dragon View Pavilion - Discover the Dragon’s Neck, a fascinating geological feature of Tap Mun (Grass Island), located at the end of informal trails north of the Hilltop Pavilion. This spot is perfect for those who appreciate unique landscapes that are less crowded.
-
Hilltop Pavilion and Lookout (Tap Mun) - Climb the steps next to the 400-year-old Tin Hau Temple and follow the trail for about 200 meters to reach Tap Mun Sitting-out Area, the island’s best viewpoint. This area includes the Hilltop Pavilion and a vast meadow, offering an unobstructed view of Mirs Bay and, on clear days, the Dapeng Peninsula in Mainland China. Relax and enjoy the cool sea breeze while watching boats pass by. When ready, head down to Pebble Beach or take on the 200-step challenge to Lung King (‘dragon view’) Pavilion.
-
Balanced Rock (Tap Mun) - Continue along the path to find two neatly stacked rectangular rocks, about six meters high, resembling the Chinese character ‘呂’(lui). It is also said to look like a stupa, and with the nearby Tap Mun Cave opening to Mirs Bay like a door, the island was named ‘Fat Tap Mun’ (‘Stupa Door’), later simplified to Tap Mun.
-
Tap Mun New Fishermen’s Village - Experience a bygone era of fishing communities on the village’s main street, where you can enjoy the sea breeze in front of a tranquil sea with skiffs and fish rafts, or purchase Tap Mun sea produce from street stalls.
-
UNESCO Geopark Volcano Discovery Centre - This center showcases the formation of Hong Kong’s unique hexagonal rock columns and others worldwide. It provides basic information on volcanology, volcano structure, volcanic eruptions, and related geological knowledge, introducing the features of the geosites in Hong Kong Geopark.
-
Sai Kung Promenade and Seafood Street - After disembarking from the ferry at Sai Kung Public Pier, stroll along the waterfront promenade known as Seafood Street. As the name suggests, you’ll soon see what’s on the menu. Restaurants line the street with tanks full of fish, crabs, shrimps, shellfish, and perhaps a few mysterious creatures, while fishermen sell their catches directly from nearby boats.
-
Hap Mun Beach - This is an excellent, easy hike for families, with some short climbs. Take a ferry from Sai Kung pier to Hap Mun Beach, then follow the trail for a pleasant 2km hike (35 mins) to Kiu Tsui pier, where Sharp Island is located. At low tide, you can walk across a tombolo to the island. The trail is lined with ancient rocks and fossils, offering great scenery from the hilltop. In spring, hundreds of butterflies flutter along the trail, creating a beautiful sight!
-
Sharp Island Sand Levee - The Sharp Island Geo Trail in the island’s western part starts at the pier and ends at an islet called Kiu Tau, passing through a beach and the tombolo. Begin at the Sharp Island Pier. To the left is a beach with ample public facilities, while natural outcrops are on the right. These outcrops mainly consist of volcanic rocks formed through the migmatisation of volcanic ash, lapillus, and lava. The tombolo’s connecting link at the beach’s end is scattered with large boulders, mostly composed of rhyolite and granite (quartz monzonite). With their extraordinary cracks, the granite boulders resemble Hong Kong’s iconic snack ― the pineapple bun. Appropriately, these boulders are called Pineapple Bun Rocks. When the tombolo emerges at low tide, visitors can walk across to Kiu Tau and ascend to the highest point for a panoramic view of the tombolo, Sai Kung Inner Sea, and Clearwater Bay Peninsula.
