Highlights
  • Central Park Carousel - Around 250,000 visitors enjoy a ride on the Central Park Carousel annually. This iconic attraction has been a favorite since its original debut in 1871.
  • Wollman Rink - Since its opening in 1949, Wollman Rink has been a beloved Central Park destination. Ice skating during the fall and winter is a top activity for both New Yorkers and tourists. Skate under a starry sky, surrounded by the stunning Manhattan skyline!
  • Chess & Checkers House Visitor Center - Built in 1952, the Chess & Checkers House provides a space for visitors of all ages to play games. The octagonal brick building is surrounded by 24 game tables shaded by a wooden trellis.
  • The Dairy Visitor Center and Gift Shop - The Children’s District, where the Dairy is located, was designed to cater to children visiting Central Park. Before playgrounds existed, the Children’s District, completed in 1872, was the only area in the Park specifically for young visitors.
  • Central Park’s Literary Walk - This broad, straight path lined with American elm trees was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux as a formal promenade and gathering space. Visitors can enjoy this area much like they would have in the 19th century: strolling, sitting, people-watching, listening to music, contemplating monuments, and admiring the trees.
  • Balto Statue - Balto became a hero after a daring journey across Alaska. In January 1925, a diphtheria outbreak threatened Nome, Alaska. With planes grounded by weather, a relay of dog-sled teams transported the vaccine nearly 700 miles in blizzard conditions in just five days and seven hours, enduring minus 30-degree Fahrenheit temperatures, ice floes, and 5,000-foot mountain peaks.
  • Rumsey Playfield - While much of Central Park has remained unchanged, Rumsey Playfield has seen many transformations. Originally featuring a restaurant designed by Park co-designer Calvert Vaux, known as the Casino (meaning “little house” in Italian), it now overlooks the Concert Ground.
  • Conservatory Water - The main attraction here is an ornamental pond, also called the Model Boat Pond, where children and hobbyists race miniature sailboats and yachts. These boats are stored and rented at the nearby Kerbs Boathouse, which also has a cafe.
  • Loeb Boathouse - Situated on the eastern edge of the Lake, Loeb Boathouse is the starting point for rowboats, offering visitors a perfect way to explore one of the Park’s most significant landscapes.
  • Bethesda Fountain - Topped by the Angel of the Waters sculpture, a bronze angel with raised wings, the Bethesda Fountain features water cascading from the angel into two basins and filling a large circular pool.
  • Cherry Hill - At the center of the carriage concourse atop Cherry Hill is the Cherry Hill Fountain. This unique fountain has a stone base topped with a finial that combines bird saucers and a light fixture with eight globes. Water drips from the saucer onto a granite and tile base before spilling into a bluestone basin.
  • Bow Bridge - Serving as a major entrance to the Ramble and a connection to a path toward Bethesda Terrace, Bow Bridge offers expansive views of the Lake and surrounding landscapes. It is one of the most photographed and romantic spots in the Park, often the site of wedding proposals.
  • Daniel Webster Monument - This monument to American lawyer and statesman Daniel Webster (1782–1852) stands along the West Drive near 72nd Street. The bronze statue shows him gazing into the distance, about to give a speech, with his right hand tucked into his coat and a stack of books at his feet.
  • Strawberry Fields, John Lennon Memorial - Strawberry Fields is a memorial to John Lennon (1940–1980), the British rock musician and peace activist. Located near the West 72nd Street entrance, the five-acre landscape includes the Imagine mosaic, where many come to honor Lennon. The memorial is named after the 1967 Beatles song “Strawberry Fields Forever.”
  • Tavern On the Green - This restaurant, located in the historic building once known as the Sheepfold, has been a Central Park fine dining destination since the 1930s.
  • Sheep Meadow - One of Central Park’s most famous landscapes, Sheep Meadow epitomizes the Park’s purpose as a retreat from urban life.
  • Pinebank Arch - Pinebank Arch is a distinctive cast-iron bridge in the south end of Central Park, spanning the bridle path.
  • Columbus Circle - Known for its shopping and as the route for the annual Macy’s parade.
