Highlights
  • Katz’s Delicatessen - What is there to say about this spot which When Harry Met Sally… made even more famous.

  • Lower East Side - Stroll. Learn. Nosh. Now you can explore an up-and-coming hip neighborhood that’s rich in history and stacked with infamously famous eats.

  • Vanessa’s Dumpling House - Vanessa’s Dumpling House has the most delicious pork dumplings. Happy to substitute to veggie for those who don’t eat pork. You won’t believe how good these are.

  • Essex Street Market - Stop and shop (if you wish) at Essex Street market but before you do we visit my friend Saad who gives us a tasting of Balsamic Vinegar and Olive Oils at his Essex Olive & Spice shop.

  • The Pickle Guys - The Pickle Guys pickles almost everything. We try three of their top sellers. They’re sweet. They’re sour. They’re awesome.

  • Economy Candy - Economy Candy has been around since 1937, dishing out chocolates, nuts, gummies and the candy so many generations have grown up on.

  • Kossar’s Bagels & Bialys (LES) - Kossar’s Bagels - you bet your babka you’ve never tasted bagels or bialys like this before. And the cream cheese? It’s the best I’ve ever had. Ever.

Excellent excellent excellent tour! Thank you Emmeline! - There are a lot of food tours and food tour companies in NYC. It’s overwhelming. I would not hesitate for a second to recommend this tour to friends and family. Emmeline was a fantastic guide. She was knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and engaging throughout the tour despite the rain, heat, and humidity. Overall, it was a wonderful experience. A great day.

Variety & Small Group, book it - Great tour! EMMALINE was very knowledgeable and acbomodating with our group. The food was enough to fill you up. The stops were a nice variety. Deli, pickles, ruglach, bagels, donuts, dumplings and plenty of stops, not rushed! Which was great. I’ve done Secret but I prefer to help the local guys. Small group of 9 on our day. Don’t hesitate to book with Nice Guy tours

A classic NY food experience - Adam was an awesome tour guide, with lots of fun and interesting stories about food and about his experiences growing up and living in New York. Plenty of food too, you will not leave hungry. We got to sample a lot of iconic NYC staples, pastrami, bagels and bialys, pickles, etc. Highly recommended.

Worth time and money! - Emmeline met us at Katz Deli. When I say “us”, my husband and I were literally the only two on the tour! It had to be a fluke. Anyways, right away, she made us feel comfortable. Learning our names and getting to know a little bit about us before we began. She asked if we had any dietary restrictions and I shared with her that I don’t eat anything with flour or sugar. She did not make me feel awkward: instead her immediate response was to go through the stops where I might feel “left out”. I assured her it was fine. And my husband would love getting my portions of sweets. Still, she found ways to accommodate me at almost every stop. For example, at the bagel place, I semi-joked that I can eat the cream cheese. She brought me my own little tub of cream cheese! Also, it was so very hot at times. She gave us our water bottle at Vanessa’s Dumpling House (my fav stop btw). It was quickly gone and we had several stops to go. She must have felt our thirst and she bought us another at the next stop on her dime. That gesture was so kind and enhanced our ability to enjoy the rest of the tour so much more. (I suggest on hot days, bring a water bottle of your own as well. We probably could have drunk 4!) At the end, she was kind enough to walk us to our correct subway line as we got confused on the way to the tour. Now to the actual tour. She was very knowledgeable and shared a mix of fun facts and rich history that made me appreciate the culture of lower east side. (I couldn’t even have held a conversation about it before.) She is a great storyteller and has a good conversational skills. (Prerequisite of this job I’m sure!) She made me wish I could stay another day to go on a Tenament Museum/Tour. I know it would have been fascinating! (Go ahead and book it! It’s my 1 regret of our 2 day stay.) I’m dying to share example facts with you, but I’ll leave that to the tour guide.) As far as food enjoyment, my husband liked the first item best-Appetizer Place. I loved seeing the narrow crowded inside with very different foods than we have in Alabama. It was nice that when we had places where we could choose what we wanted, she gave good recommendations. The pickled pineapple was unbelievable! I don’t even like pickled anything other than pickles. Spicy, sweet, sour. If they are not included on your tour, I highly recommend buying some.

Don’t Miss - Very fun and lots of food. Katz’s Deli and the dumpling place are the best. Billy was our guide and had good information about the neighborhood.

Good food but disappointing tour - The highlight of the tour was the visit to Katz's Deli and its wonderful pastrami. The dumplings and bagels were good, but not outstanding for NYC. Nevertheless, I was disappointed in the tour itself. There was not a lot of information on the history of the LES beyond the fact that it was heavily influenced by Jewish immigrants who were housed in crowded tenements. I expected more detail and more insight. The tour guide was pleasant but not particularly engaged in our interests or the subject matter. Perhaps he was just having a bad day.
