Now Free for Those >= 25 - The Whitney is now free for those 25 or under! Highly worth the visit, the current galleries focusing on highlighting parts of the permanent collection have some really great modern art. There's free tours on certain floors with a museum volunteer guides who are happy to answer questions and can provide additional insight on their selected pieces. We stopped for a coffee and cookie on the first floor, re-entry to the galleries with the day's ticket is accepted, and spent so much time on certain floors we didn't finish the museum yet!

Visit to Whitney Museum of American Art - An excellent experience. The Alvin Ailey exhibition was particularly superb. Plus the day was gorgeous (cool but sunny) and the views from the rooftop terrace breathtaking.

Amazing exhibit on Alvin AIley - The current exhibit on Alvin Ailey is amazing. Provides historical, social and artistic context, demonstrating connections between Ailey and other dancers, musicians, and visual artists. I love the videos across the top of the room allowing everyone to see without standing in line or waiting your turn. Volume could have been a little softer, since there were also audio stations for people to listen to other A/V with headphones provided, but the headphones didn't block out the ambient sounds. But really, so beautiful. Also enjoyed the other floors, but this was really the highlight. The roof top cafe was fun, with great views, and food priced similar to a lot of places in NYC.

THE Gallery of Contemporary American Art. THE roof terrace in New York. - Those interested in Hopper, O’Keefe or Basquiat are in the right place. On top is the great architecture and the view from one of the numerous roof terraces. One of the few museums in New York that can be captured with a visit ;)

Our First Visit - The big elevator with the engaging operator was fun. The multi- floor exhibit of “deaf people’s experience” lost our engagement. We did try hard to understand, but got frustrated. Maybe a 1/2 of floor instead of 2.? The building’s architecture is intriguing and enjoyed the views from the balconies. The basic art exhibit was good.

Wonderful Museum, Beautiful Building just the right size - They have free Fridays, which are fun and sometimes with music and drinks. There are other late night events which can be really good. The Alvin Ailey was one of the best exhibits i have seen them do in the last 5 years. Certainly worth it. They keep a good active energy at this museum.

Lovely building but not worth the pricey admission - Having heard so much about The Whitney and as a lover of American art, I decided to give it a try. The building itself is very large and spacious, with plenty of room (the opposite of MOMA). But the collection itself left a lot to be desired; a few artists I knew and most I didn’t. Good exhibit on Alvin Ailey, but he’s known more for dance. And even thought it’s American anrt, I saw nothing before about 1890. All in all, not worth $30.

If you have $30 to spend, go for the view (and Hopper) - In a museum of this size and based on American Art, one would expect to find the substance of American painting in the 20th and 21st centuries. But the museum presents American painting only in a disjointed way and with so many gaps and dead ends that it was astonishing. Apart from Hopper, well represented, O'Keefe is present with only one painting exposed, and Basquiat, Motherwell, Haring etc. are totally absent. That's a big disappointment. The scenography is not transcendent either. It's just plan plan plan. Videos, but not directly related to art, on gender issues, a contemporary obsession. Not that it's interesting, but is it the place in a museum about American art, and that presents so few works? The view from, in particular, the terrace of the cafeteria, is definitely worth a visit. Beautiful panoramas can be seen on the Hudson River. But as usual, the cafeteria Awards are... excessive. It is somewhat the same Impression as with the Guggenheim: monumental architecture by Renzo Piano, plethora of stores (21 000 works), but in the end, an almost empty shell. Do not go to this museum thinking that you will access the substantial marrow of American art... You may be very disappointed. The surroundings of the museum and in particular this sandy beach is very nice.
