2025: Ancient Fire - NJ volcanic origins and deep history as Continents are Torn Apart

New Jersey - Embark on a road trip to explore the volcanic history of Northern NJ, which dates back to the Late Triassic period, around 200 million years ago. These mountains emerged due to volcanic activity linked to the rifting of the supercontinent Pangaea. As North America began to drift away from Africa, magma surged through the Earth’s crust, forming the distinctive basalt ridges that define the region today.

You will encounter a landscape dominated by basalt, an igneous rock indicative of the area’s volcanic origins. This is sharply contrasted by layers of sedimentary rocks, such as sandstone and conglomerates, which narrate the stories of ancient rivers and lakes that once existed here.

Volcanic origin mountains are renowned for their striking series of ridges and valleys, running roughly northeast to southwest. These formations offer breathtaking vistas and are a favorite among hikers and nature lovers.
