Roussillon is located within the borders of the Natural Regional Park of Luberon. It is a small Medieval village in Provence with population of about 1,300 inhabitants. It is famous for its large ochre deposits found in the clay surrounding the village. Ochres are pigments ranging from yellow and orange to red. One of the former ochre quarries is to be visited via the “Sentier des Ocres” (Ochre Path). 15:45 Departure from Roussillon to the Medieval village Gordes. It takes just 15 minutes drive (11 km).

About 16,000 are living in the ancient town centre enclosed by its medieval walls. Avignon is one of the few French cities which preserved its city walls. Between 1309 and 1377, during the Avignon Papacy, seven successive popes resided in Avignon. In 1348 Pope Clement VI bought the town from Joanna I of Naples. Papal control persisted until 1791 when, during the French Revolution, it became part of France. The historical centre including the Palais des Papes, the cathedral, and the Pont d’Avignon—became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995. Listed as a World Heritage Site by Unesco, the Popes’ Palace is one of the 10 most visited monuments in France with 650,000 visitors per year.
