Nice - Around 350 BC, the Greeks of Marseille established a permanent settlement named Nikaia, in honor of Nike, the goddess of victory.[5] Over the centuries, the town has changed ownership multiple times. Its strategic position and port greatly enhanced its maritime power. From 1388, it was under the dominion of Savoy, later becoming part of the French First Republic from 1792 to 1815, after which it was returned to the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia, the legal predecessor of the Kingdom of Italy, until it was re-annexed by France in 1860.

Eze - The area around Èze was first inhabited in 200 BC as a commune located near Mount Bastide. The earliest mention of the name “Èze” appears in the maritime records of Antonin as a bay known as the St. Laurent of Èze.

Monaco - As the second smallest state in the world, Monaco is a city-state covering 1.2 square miles. Francesco Grimaldi captured the Rock of Monaco in 1297, initiating the Grimaldi dynasty under the sovereignty of the Republic of Genoa. The Grimaldis expanded their holdings by acquiring Menton in 1346 and Roquebrune in 1355. In 1338, Monegasque ships led by Carlo Grimaldi participated in the English Channel naval campaign alongside France and Genoa. Loot from the sack of Southampton was brought back to Monaco, boosting the principality’s prosperity until 1860. In 2002, a new treaty between France and Monaco established that if there are no heirs to continue the dynasty, the Principality will remain an independent nation, rather than being annexed by France. However, Monaco’s military defense remains the responsibility of France.
