A Journey Through Time in Njeguši

Our family’s European adventures have always been a blend of history, culture, and a touch of culinary delight. This time, our journey took us to the picturesque village of Njeguši, nestled high above the Adriatic Sea. Known as the birthplace of the Petrović dynasty, Njeguši is a treasure trove of Montenegrin heritage and tradition.

As we arrived, the village greeted us with its charming stone houses and the aroma of smoked meats wafting through the air. Our guide, a local with an infectious passion for his homeland, introduced us to the rich history of the Petrović dynasty. The children were captivated by tales of royal intrigue and the strategic importance of this mountainous region.

The highlight of our visit to Njeguši was undoubtedly the tasting of the famous Njeguški sir and pršut. The cheese, creamy and rich, paired perfectly with the smoky, savory prosciutto. It was a culinary experience that not only delighted our taste buds but also connected us to the centuries-old traditions of the region. Ascending to Lovcen National Park

Leaving Njeguši, we embarked on a scenic drive to Lovcen National Park. The journey itself was a visual feast, with winding roads offering breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and the distant sea. Our children, always eager for a bit of adventure, were thrilled by the prospect of climbing to the mausoleum of Petar II Petrović Njegoš.

The climb to the mausoleum, perched atop one of Lovcen’s peaks, was a test of endurance but well worth the effort. As we ascended the 461 steps, the anticipation built with each step. Upon reaching the top, we were rewarded with a panoramic view that was nothing short of spectacular. The mausoleum itself, a tribute to Montenegro’s most revered historical figure, was both awe-inspiring and humbling.

Our guide shared stories of Petar II’s contributions to Montenegrin culture and literature, bringing history to life in a way that engaged both adults and children alike. It was a moment of reflection and appreciation for the rich tapestry of history that Montenegro offers.

Exploring the Royal Capital Cetinje

Our final destination was the Old Royal Town of Cetinje, a place where history seems to linger in every corner. Walking through its streets, we felt as though we had stepped back in time. We visited several historical sites, each offering a glimpse into the past.
