Welcome to the Roman-influenced city of Languedoc, Nimes. This city is home to a well-preserved 4th century BC Roman temple and a intact Roman Amphitheatre at its core. Nimes is also famed as the origin of denim, which translates to “from Nîmes”. This fabric was sent to the US in the early 1800s for the construction of sails, tarps, and laborer’s pants. Subsequently, a migrant from Bavaria, Levi Strauss, utilized this material in 1870 to create trousers for the emerging frontier of the Wild West. The crafting took place in Genoa, which also coined the term “jeans”, using “de Nimes” fabric.
