This marks the start of an exciting adventure as participants kayak across the lake and hike on Austdalsbreen. Trips commence on Styggevatnet, Jostedal, in early July (ideally by July 11) and continue until the end of September.
Once the lake thaws, kayaking tours begin. It takes approximately one and a half hours to paddle to Austdalsbreen (glacier), which features a 30m-high front that releases ice towers into the lake. Along the way, participants search for icebergs that have broken off the glacier in previous days. After kayaking, there is a lunch break to enjoy the stunning view of the glacier’s front.
The adventure continues with a glacier hike on the blue ice at the glacier’s front, navigating around large crevasses towards the glacier’s center for a breathtaking view over the lake and Jostedalsbreen National Park. The glacier exploration lasts about one and a half to two hours, during which various features of this natural wonder are explored and explained. After the glacier tour, participants return to the kayaks for the journey back to civilization.
For families with young children, the specially designed Glacier Half Day tour is recommended.
