Kalimbuang Bori Tourist Attraction - Bori Kalimbuang is situated in Sesean Village, North Toraja. Visitors can admire a charming collection of neatly arranged menhirs. Although it is not far from the center of North Toraja’s capital, it is not overly crowded with tourists.
This site is approximately 5 km from Rantepao city, located on Jl. Bori, Sesean District in North Toraja. The journey to this megalithic site involves several routes with challenging terrain, but upon arrival, visitors will be captivated by its beauty.
Bori Kalimbuang is home to ancient menhirs, with around 102 standing majestically. The varying sizes and arrangements create a stunning and delightful scene. There are 24 large stones, 24 medium-sized, and 54 smaller ones. This megalithic site is one of nine classified as a UNESCO world cultural heritage tourism object in North Toraja.
Toraja Village - During the Rambu Solo ceremony, various fascinating activities take place:
- Mapasilaga tedong (buffalo fighting). The competing buffaloes in Toraja have unique characteristics, such as horns that curve downwards or are striped, known as tedong bonga. This type of water buffalo (babalus bubalis: mud buffalo) is an endemic species in Tana Toraja.
- Ritual dances of Rambu Solo, including ma’badong, ma’dondi, ma’randing, ma’katia, ma’papanggan, and massailo. In ma’badong, guests stand in a circle holding hands, singing and dancing together. Their song expresses sadness.
- Instrumental music called pa’pompang, pa’dalidali, and unnosong.
- Matinggoro tedong (buffalo slaughter). The unique method involves cutting the buffalo’s neck with a single swing of a chopper. The buffalo is first tethered to a stone called simbuang batu. The buffalo butcher (patinggoro tedong) swings the chopper swiftly.
Culture Tour
Kete Kesu Village - The four grand tongkonan and numerous granaries that form Ke’te Kesu’ were relocated to this scenic site in 1927 when the astute family head realized the Dutch government largely ignored those far from their administrative centers. Later, to share their heritage globally and highlight the importance of preserving traditions, the Kesu’ers had their village designated as the first official obyek wisata (tourism site) in Toraja and successfully lobbied for UNESCO World Heritage recognition.
Behind the village, on the cliff face, are cave graves and ancient hanging graves, some reportedly over 500 years old. Deteriorating coffins are suspended on wooden beams under an overhang, while others have fallen into piles below, filled with bones and skulls.
