Additional Information

This was a battleground for two distinct cultures two millennia ago. Your tour guide can seamlessly intertwine stories from both the Roman and the indigenous viewpoints. The goal of the Romans to seize control over Britain was always clear. Julius Caesar documented both the plentiful resources of the British Isles, as well as tales of giants and mythical beasts. Though Caesar first reached out to the residents of Britain, a full-blown invasion wouldn’t occur for an additional 90 years. Political instability in Rome led the new emperor Claudius to bring his troops to the British coastline, forever altering the nation. Note that while transportation is necessary from Cawfields to Vindolanda, it’s not included; reach out to us for taxi information if necessary.

  • Transport is not included with this tour, though you can follow in your vehicle to each location.

Brilliant half day tour - What a fantastic half day tour. Kevin was absolutely engaging and his storytelling really made the experience come alive. What a personable and knowledgeable guide. One of the best tours we have had, thank you! Vindolanda was the icing on the cake!

Awesome tour! - Our family did the half day tour and it was the perfect amount of time and not a moment was wasted. Kevin was awesome from the stories to the historical notes everything you need to know. Visiting the wall can be a bit anticlimactic if you don’t have someone to add the information and historical context to what you are seeing. This is a must do tour if you’re coming to walk the wall. Couldn't recommend more.

One of our most favorite tours! - Taking a walk along part of Hadrian's Wall one could imagine what it might have looked like in AD122. Kevin described so clearly how it was constructed, what it looked like and how the Romans lived in the fort and village in Vindolanda. Fascinating! Great experience!

Interesting knowledge - An exceptional travel experience! Kevin is not your typical tour guide; he's an enthusiast of English and Celtic cultures with an extensive knowledge base. He answered all our questions effortlessly and even provided additional insights. We had the half-day tour, which was divided into two parts. The first part was near the quarry and Barracks 42, where the Hadrian's Wall is relatively well-preserved. The second part was at the Vindolanda site, including visits to both the ruins and the museum. Kevin was familiar with nearly every exhibit in the museum, offering deep background knowledge. I highly recommend this private tour for families with elderly or children. The pace is just right—not too tiring, yet full of surprises."

A must for visitors to Northumberland - Excellent guide, informative and interesting. A chance to get out on the wall, but pretty easy walking. Made the visit to Vindolanda come alive. Great for lovers of history, but accessible for visitors of all interests.

A tour to remember. - This was a fascinating tour. We learnt about the Ramans in Britain and how they interacted with the local population. Walking along the wall gave a real insight into the huge effort that went into building the wall and the trenches to keep people in and out of the territory. We also spent time at Vindolanda and could see the lifestyle of the people both Roman and natives. It was a really interesting tour.

Amazing Experience - We took a half-day guided tour with Kevin as our guide. The tour and Kevin's knowledge exceeded all expectations. The walk along Hadrian's Wall is brief but informative and the time at Vindolanda was great - I was completely unaware these types of ruins existed and was in awe the entire time. We had rain on our tour so ending at the museum was timed well. I would definitely recommend this tour to anyone interested in Hadrian's Wall and don't know where to start!
