Additional Information

This was a battleground for two distinct cultures two millennia ago. Your tour guide can seamlessly intertwine stories from both the Roman and the indigenous viewpoints. The goal of the Romans to seize control over Britain was always clear. Julius Caesar documented both the plentiful resources of the British Isles, as well as tales of giants and mythical beasts. Though Caesar first reached out to the residents of Britain, a full-blown invasion wouldn’t occur for an additional 90 years. Political instability in Rome led the new emperor Claudius to bring his troops to the British coastline, forever altering the nation. Note that while transportation is necessary from Cawfields to Vindolanda, it’s not included; reach out to us for taxi information if necessary.

  • Transport is not included with this tour, though you can follow in your vehicle to each location.

A must for visitors to Northumberland - Excellent guide, informative and interesting. A chance to get out on the wall, but pretty easy walking. Made the visit to Vindolanda come alive. Great for lovers of history, but accessible for visitors of all interests.

A tour to remember. - This was a fascinating tour. We learnt about the Ramans in Britain and how they interacted with the local population. Walking along the wall gave a real insight into the huge effort that went into building the wall and the trenches to keep people in and out of the territory. We also spent time at Vindolanda and could see the lifestyle of the people both Roman and natives. It was a really interesting tour.

Amazing Experience - We took a half-day guided tour with Kevin as our guide. The tour and Kevin's knowledge exceeded all expectations. The walk along Hadrian's Wall is brief but informative and the time at Vindolanda was great - I was completely unaware these types of ruins existed and was in awe the entire time. We had rain on our tour so ending at the museum was timed well. I would definitely recommend this tour to anyone interested in Hadrian's Wall and don't know where to start!

Hadrian's Wall Guided Tour - Last week we went on a half day guided tour of Hadrian’s Wall. We were met by a man dressed as a roman soldier with a sword and shield by his side, this was Kevin our guide. His depth and wealth of knowledge is exceptional. His delivery of facts with context extraordinary, succinct and very articulate. We were enthralled by his storytelling. You will learn more about this part in history than ever before. There is no greater authority on the subject. If you are planning on going to see the wall then you must book this tour. You wont be disappointed, I guarantee.

Highly recommended - This tour achieved the perfect balance between informative and entertaining with an incredibly knowledgeable tour guide and a fascinating subject in scenic Northumberland. Kevin offered in depth information during the tour and was able to answer every question with insight and breadth. Overall one of the best history tours we’ve taken. Highly recommended!

Best tours we could have asked for!! - We could not have asked for a better tour of a section of Hadrian’s Wall and nearby Vindolanda Museum! Kevin is incredibly knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the Roman period in Ancient Britain. As Kevin toured us through the museum (which has an active archaeological dig April to September) I felt sad for guests who did not have the benefit of his insights and stories. My husband, who loves historical walking tours, was extremely pleased that we had been lucky enough to benefit from Kevin’s expertise. Highly recommend!!

Awesome Guide and Tour - The tour was as described and more. Kevin was great, more than just knowing his stuff, he had passion for the history and awe at the artifacts displayed at the museum. It was a very personalized tour, he slowed to our pace and was very attentive. We disembarked from a cruise and Kevin referred us to a taxi company (Haydon Taxis) that knew the somewhat complex itinerary (two locations) which made the whole tour worry free.

The big picture - Kevin started out by showing us the clothing and weapons of Roman Britain, then we went for a short walk to see the wall, a milecastle and the earthworks south of the wall from various angles. Kevin is very knowledgeable about the Romans and their history in the area, and did a wonderful job of describing Hadrian's Wall not just as a boundary, but as an economic and social ecosystem, connected up with the whole Roman Empire, its trade and its people. This was reinforced by the visit to Vindolanda, which under Kevin's guidance, put the Wall into a much wider perspective. A real day to remember.
