Highlights
  • Captain Cook’s Landing Place - Step onto the historic site where the renowned British explorer, Captain James Cook, once landed. Discover the commemorative plaque, marking the spot where a grand Banyan tree stood in 1777.

This landmark is steeped in history, having been visited by Queen Elizabeth II in 1970, honoring the island’s title as the “Friendly Islands,” a name given by Captain Cook himself.

Engage with your guide for more details about the events that took place here before taking a brief but memorable photo stop at Captain Cook’s Landing.

  • Ancient Royal Tombs of Lapaha - Known as the Lapaha’s Paepae ‘o Tele’a tombs, these structures are a testament to Tonga’s ancient stonework heritage. Unique in the Pacific, these monuments are unparalleled anywhere else on Earth.

Dating back over a thousand years, the Terraced Tombs resemble the construction techniques of the Egyptian Pyramids, yet their intricately joined hard-coral slabs showcase a craftsmanship that defies the use of mechanical tools.

Tentatively recognized by UNESCO as a potential World Heritage site, the Lapaha’s Paepae ‘o Tele’a tombs are of great significance in Polynesian history. Unlike previous stops, you’ll have the chance to approach the Terraced Tombs and touch the ancient coral slabs that have endured for centuries.

We ask guests to respect the sanctity of this historical site and refrain from walking or sitting on the tomb.

  • Ha’amonga’a Maui Trilithon - Be intrigued by the Ha’aomga A’Maui, featuring three massive 40-ton coral limestone slabs steeped in legend. Believed to function as a seasonal calendar, this trilithon is said to have marked the solstices and equinoxes by aligning with the sunrise, similar to a Polynesian Stonehenge.

You can approach and photograph this ancient wonder, but we ask guests to respect its cultural significance and not climb on the structure.

Facilities at this stop include restrooms and local vendors offering traditional crafts and trinkets.

  • Mapu’a ‘a Vaea Blowholes - Witness the stunning Mapu’a ‘a Vaea Blowholes, a must-see in Tonga. Relax as nature puts on a mesmerizing display, creating a symphony of water and air along 5km of shoreline!

Enjoy your complimentary packed lunch, take stunning photos, and create unforgettable memories.

Your guide will ensure a convenient stop near the viewing platform, allowing you to enjoy the panoramic views and recharge for the next part of our adventure.

  • 3 Headed Coconut - Did you know that coconut trees usually have just one head? This makes the rare anomaly you’ll see one of the rarest coconut trees in the world.

Located by the roadside, this resilient tree has survived numerous cyclones, standing as a testament to nature’s enduring power.

Our guide will make a brief stop near the tree for a quick photo. Whether you’re traveling alone or with others, our guide will help capture this unique moment, ensuring you have a cherished keepsake.

  • Tonga - Potential Bonus Sites

While we aim to include the following sites in our itinerary, we cannot guarantee a visit. Rest assured, every effort will be made to include these as potential bonus sites, depending on timing and weather conditions.

  • Fishing Pigs at Navutoka Beach
  • Hufangalupe Natural Land Bridge
  • Abel Tasman Landing
  • Talamahu Markets
  • Ha’avakatolo Si’i - Thanks to our expert guides, we’ve arranged a brief visit to Ha’atakatolo Cemetery, where migrating flying foxes add a unique touch to the serene surroundings.

Enjoy the rare chance to see these majestic creatures in their natural habitat, as our guides provide insights into the local ecosystem and the significance of these enchanting, winged residents.

  • Tsunami Rock - Explore the Tsunami Rock, where you’ll find a mix of scientific theories and local folklore.

While scientists suggest this massive coral boulder was moved inland by an ancient tsunami, local legends say the Demigod Maui threw this giant rock from his celestial realm to silence a crowing rooster!

  • Ha’atafu Beach - Take a scenic drive to the island’s tip, where you’ll find the solemn beauty of Ha’atafu Beach. This site serves as a reminder of the tragic tsunami caused by the volcanic eruption on January 15, 2022.

Triggered by an underwater volcano, the tsunami left a devastating mark, covering several Tongan islands in volcanic ash.

Your guide will recount the events of that day, offering firsthand narratives that bring the story to life.
