Situated in Sri Lanka’s central highlands, Horton Plains is a national park elevated at 2100-2300m (6900-7500ft) featuring montane grassland and cloud forest. It’s a hub of biodiversity, with many species exclusive to this area. This park is a favorite among tourists who typically spend 2-3 hours walking to explore its marvels. Serving as the source for three major Sri Lankan rivers; the Mahaweli, Kelani and Walawe, Horton Plains boasts a blend of grassland and montane forest vegetation, housing many indigenous woody plants.
The park is frequently visited by large herds of Sri Lankan sambar deer and is significant for several bird species that are not only endemic to Sri Lanka but are unique to Horton Plains. The magnificent view from the World’s End precipice and the marvel of Baker’s falls are two of the park’s predominant attractions.
