Discover the enchantment of Stonehenge Aotearoa, New Zealand’s unique open-air observatory. This remarkable site has been carefully designed to demonstrate how our ancestors comprehended the changing seasons, the movement of the stars, and how these cosmic cycles impacted their everyday lives. Unlike many ancient henges worldwide that are in ruins, Stonehenge Aotearoa is a fully operational observatory and the largest astronomical instrument in New Zealand.

The experience begins at 4:00pm with an engaging introduction that explores the intriguing history and purpose of Stonehenge Aotearoa. Participants will learn about the henge’s importance in ancient times and its role in marking significant seasonal events.

Weather permitting, at 4:56pm, attendees will witness a breathtaking event—the Sun setting on the Winter Solstice Heel Stone. This precise alignment highlights the incredible astronomical knowledge of our ancestors and provides a moment of connection with the past.
