You can expect that your first lesson will start on the beach with your instructor. You will spend about 20 minutes learning proper water safety and etiquette, paddling technique, turning the surfboard, maneuvering over waves and positioning to stand up and ride your first wave. The rest of the time, about an hour to an hour and a half, is spent in the water learning to stand up and ride waves.
Once you stand up on your board for your first time, you will understand why surfers are so stoked all the time.

Outstanding lesson - I finally got up! - Pauli was an outstanding instructor. I have taken lessons a number of times while on vacation in Hawai’i over the past 15 years. I finally got up! So did my teen-age girl. Pauli provided a great balance between instruction and encouragement. A super experience. 74 is not too old to learn.

Great experience - We got surfing lessons for our teenage daughters (17 and 19) and it was the highlight of their vacation. Josh was absolutely incredible- super attentive and patient; he quickly built their confidence in being able to ride the waves.

Successful surfing lesson for my 13 year old daughter! - Great surf lesson! Instructors gave great lessons before getting into the water so my 13 year old daughter was able to be successful in the water. They were so friendly and encouraging. My daughter had an amazing time and now wants to rent a board to surf more!

Great easy going instructors. Can't go wrong with Waikiki beach. - The semi private lesson was great, 2 instructors for 5 teen and adult surfers. Mostly al beginner to intermediate surfers. Waikik beach is perfect to start your surfing journey. A short walk from the beach to the surf shop, which is somewhat hidden inside a ground floor or a hotel, inside a cafe, limited bathroom access.

Great First time lesson - My teen son did surfing for the first time. He loved it. It was a small group lesson class and the instructor did an awesome job. My son likes surfing now and wants to do more of it.

Friendly, patient and accommodating group! - The nicest, the most helpful & patient group of people at the Big Wave Dave Surf & Coffee! They had an extensive training session and then helped us through the entire surfing 🏄♂️ experience, which was amazing!
We most definitely recommend them!

Surfing now checked off bucket list - Very fun. Paul was a awesome teacher. I learned all the basics to get up and ride a wave. There's a lot more to it then I thought.

Enjoyable first time surfing experience - Being a first timer, I was not sure how I will be able to handle the waves. Also, my first time going a little deeper off the shore. The instructors were patient and very helpful. It took me time to get adjusted to the waves. I was knocked off the board the first few times and struggled a bit to get back on the board, but every time my instructors Josh and Cody encouraged me to keep going.
I would recommend a private lesson for a beginner so you can get more reps and attention.

Overpriced - We booked and got moved to diff company - less hours, not private. Our guy was great, but wasn’t worth the $$

3rd time doing surfing lessons, WORST EXPERIENCE OF THE 3! - Instructors weren't great at helping us and even starting surfing themselves during the lesson. Beach was extremely rocky and they didn't bother to provide us with shoes for it or even rent them as an option. Instructions took so long we were out in the ocean for like 30 minutes out of what was supposed to be an hour and a half of surfing lessons. Nickle and dimed had to rent rash guards for $5 a person and $5 a lock to store our stuff. Third time doing surfing lessons and by far the worst experience I've had out of the three.
