This workshop was established by Doña Rosa Real Mateo de Nieto, who transformed the traditional black clay pottery, known as barro negro, by developing a technique that gives the pieces a distinctive shine.

At this historic workshop, visitors can observe skilled artisans demonstrating the unique process of creating barro negro pottery. Learn about the traditional methods used to mold and polish the clay, resulting in the signature glossy finish that has made these pieces famous worldwide.

• José García’s Workshop - The tour begins at the “Manos que Ven” workshop in San Antonino Castillo Velasco, Oaxaca. This esteemed atelier was founded by Maestro José García Antonio, who, despite losing his sight, continues to create stunning clay sculptures, particularly his iconic mermaid figures, using his highly developed sense of touch.

Here, guests will start their experience with a pottery class led by one of his apprentices, immersing themselves in the traditional techniques of the workshop. During the class, they will have the opportunity to craft their own mezcalero, an iconic piece of Oaxacan culture, which can be taken home as a meaningful keepsake from this inspiring place filled with history, resilience, and artistry.
