We’ll take several breaks to admire the art and snap photos in the city’s oldest neighborhoods, Jalatlaco and Xochimilco, where alleys are decorated by Oaxacan artists and feature Oaxaca’s emblematic architecture.
- Templo de San Matias Jalatlaco - Situated in the popular Jalatlaco neighborhood, this area is known for its unique architecture and vibrant murals that celebrate the Day of the Dead festivities. Famous for its traditional “comparsas,” it has become a cultural and tourist hotspot where we can capture stunning photos and learn about Oaxaca’s urban planning and celebrations.
- Los Arquitos De Xochimilco - Known for its colorful streets and historic houses, the Xochimilco neighborhood is one of the oldest in the city, founded in 1486 by Xochimilca-Aztec warriors. Here, we’ll see pre-colonial buildings and the colonial-era arches of Xochimilco, part of the San Felipe aqueduct built in the mid-18th century to supply water to the population. A must-see when visiting Oaxaca!
- Cerro del Fortin - Depending on the group’s physical condition, we’ll visit the viewpoint on the highest hill near the center, offering unique panoramic views of the city—perfect for photos and sunsets! We’ll also pass by the Oaxaca crafts house and the home of one of Mexico’s most iconic figures, former president and Oaxacan native Don Benito Juárez García!
- Templo de Santo Domingo de Guzman - We’ll visit one of the most beautiful churches in Latin America, the Temple of Santo Domingo de Guzmán! Now a cultural center, it includes the Ex-convent, the Museum of the Cultures of Oaxaca, the Ethnobotanical Garden, the Burgoa Library, and the Public Newspaper Archive. This grand complex has served many purposes since its construction began in 1570, reflecting much of Oaxaca’s history.
We’ll admire the New Spain baroque architecture of the stunning Temple of Santo Domingo de Guzmán, a UNESCO World Heritage site. With some luck, we might witness a “calenda” or “wedding” in the streets, as the celebrations here never end!
