Highlights
  • Centro ecoturístico La Cumbre Ixtepeji - Discover the forest of the Sierra Norte in Oaxaca and reach one of the highest points in the region (3,200 meters above sea level). La Cumbre Ixtepeji is home to a rich biodiversity and offers breathtaking views that inspire reflection and appreciation of nature’s beauty.

After a 1-hour drive, we’ll enjoy a local breakfast to fuel up for the hike. Our hike will take us on flat trails with varying elevations, covering a loop of 5-23 kilometers over 3-5 hours, depending on your skill level. These trails are moderately challenging for beginners. Along the way, we’ll encounter various types of trees, plants, and seasonal mushrooms. Upon reaching the summit, we’ll take a break and, on clear days, enjoy views of the Sierra Norte mountains and Mexico’s tallest peak. On cloudy days, we’ll be surrounded by clouds, creating a unique and otherworldly atmosphere.

On our return, we’ll take a different downhill trail through lush, humid nature with fun descents that you can run down if you choose. Once we reach the cabins, we’ll rest before continuing to our vehicle.

We’ll bid farewell to the mountain with a meal at a local restaurant, savoring the flavors of the community’s cuisine before heading back to Oaxaca.

Wonderful guide and environment - A pleasant surprise, Luis, our excellent guide. Very pleasant, patient, smiling and with great knowledge of the place in terms of routes, the town and its inhabitants. During the tour he taught us and explained different types of vegetation and was a great connoisseur of all types of fungi.

Mountain Hike with a beautiful view and rewarding experience! - Luis is so knowledgeable and friendly as a tour guide, and patient as well. He is very familiar with the routes, and took us to incredibly beautiful places. We had a great time! Be aware that it is a proper hike in mountain terrain, not just a walk in the forest- we somewhat underestimated the difficulty of the terrain and overestimated our own physical abilities, and therefore suffered somewhat on the long very steep hills (but we don't blame him for that!). It is physically challenging, so we would suggest that if you are not very athletic or a regular hiker, you may want to get some practice in beforehand, or else reach out to Luis beforehand to discuss beginners routes. But we would definitely recommend it for a prepared hiker! Beautiful nature, beautiful mountains and unique plants, a lovely welcoming experience in one of Los Pueblos Mancomunados villages, and so conveniently arranged to take care of everything (snacks, meals, pickup and drive from a central location, skillful guiding). At the end of the day it was an unforgettable experience. Bring lots of water!

Incredible hike with Luis - Luis was an amazing guide. He entertained us with his knowledge of the flora and fauna, including the culinary and medicinal uses of the plants in the forest. Our hike took us through varied terrain, mostly in pine forest and we hike to a peak of 10,500 feet. He was very considerate about the pace, and suggested several different routes depending on our energy level. The vie from the top was spectacular. Breakfast and lunch at two local roadside restaurants were easily the best food of our trip to Oaxaca. Luis was so thoughtful, considerate and knowledgeable that he will make any hike fit your ability and interests and give you a wonderful experience. Totally worth it! - What an incredible trip with Luis! It was myself and my two boys, 11 and 15. We loved getting out of the city feeling the cool breezes, smelling the clean air and seeing the beautiful views. Luis tailors the hike to your needs and provides snacks and water. Then there's the meals! A delicious breakfast and lunch and hand selected spots that were so special. Can't recommend this enough, Luis is a knowledgeable and kind guide!

Beautiful hike with a talented guide. - If you like hiking, I would recommend Más Montaña. Luis is passionate about the mountain and knows it well. He customized the experience to our preference and shared authentic local food at two interesting spots. He also picked great music for the rides to and from the mountain!

Great Day in the Mountains - My husband and I did a hike with Luis in 2022 and enjoyed it so much we signed up again this year and brought friends with us. Luis is a great guide - he is knowledgebable about the environment and is in tune with the abilites and wishes of the group as far as which routes are best to take. We stopped for a delicious breakfast before the hike and enjoyed a big lunch afterward. Spending the day in the beautiful mountains was a nice contrast to all the time we had spent in the city. I hope to return to Oaxaca and would happily do another hike with Luis. Highly recommended.

Perfect and customized hike. I can highly recommend Luis as a tour guide. He was a good and knowledgeable guide. - Luis our tour guide was the best tour guide. He was good at adjusting the tour so it was just perfect for us in every way. Loved all about the nature, the views, the meals and the length was perfect as well. We hiked from 2700 MASL to around 3300 MASL. Many options for cutting short/going more or less steep/extending the hike etc. Also the very friendly driver was always close by with water supplies etc. The pace was just right for us and the dog Valentin was a great companion on the whole trail. Highly recommend!!! You need to book this hike! ❤️ you won’t regret it
