- Zona Arqueológica de Monte Albán - Recognized as the capital of the Zapotec empire, the inhabitants referred to themselves as “people of the clouds” due to its location on a plateau that appears to touch the sky. It is regarded as one of the most significant cities in Mesoamerica.
- Zona Arqueológica de Mitla - Mitla’s architecture is heavily influenced by the Mixtec culture, noted for its stunning buildings adorned with Greek mosaics and cruciform tombs beneath the structures. Its construction style suggests that Mitla was among the first anti-seismic cities in Mesoamerica.
- Dainzú - Dainzú is a Zapotec settlement situated in the Tlacolula Valley. Although it existed at the same time as Monte Albán, its foundation predates the great city’s establishment. During the 7th to 5th century BC, it was contemporary with other sites in the Central Valleys of Oaxaca, like San José Mogote. Despite Monte Albán’s rise as the dominant city, Dainzú remained a significant settlement during the Classic period but eventually declined alongside Monte Albán. Dainzú’s structures are adapted to the terrain, with each monumental center appearing to “lean” against the hillside. The architectural complexes include stepped platforms likely used for religious purposes. One of these, in the lower section, contains a series of reliefs mostly depicting ball players, reminiscent of those in the Los Danzantes building at Monte Albán. Other complexes include residential platforms, religious sites, and a Ball Game court.
- Teotitlán del Valle - Artisans craft rugs from natural wool on domestic looms, using natural dyes for coloring. Their designs range from codices to pictorial reproductions of artists like Tamayo, Miró, Matisse, Toledo, and Picasso.
