Historically, the caves were initially used by the Taino Indians for shelter, as evidenced by the discovery of cave paintings and pottery fragments. Runaway slaves found refuge here while evading their masters. During the British Invasion in 1665, the Spanish used the caves as a hiding spot, and smugglers later utilized them to transport arms to Cuba, facilitated by a tunnel leading to the sand. Towards the end of World War II, the Jamaican government used the cave entrance to store rum barrels.
