- Ohrid - Enchanting Ohrid is North Macedonia’s most alluring destination. It is nestled on the edge of the tranquil Lake Ohrid, featuring a charming old quarter that descends steep streets, adorned with stunning churches and crowned by the remnants of a medieval castle. Traditional eateries and lakeside cafes bring vibrancy to the cobblestone streets, which can be particularly lively during the peak summer season.
- Monastery of Saint Naum - Sveti Naum, located 29km south of Ohrid, presents a striking view from a bluff near the Albanian border and is a favored day trip from Ohrid. Naum was a contemporary of St Kliment, and their monastery served as an educational hub. The church’s iconostasis dates back to 1711, and the frescoes to the 19th century; the entry fee is well worth it. Sandy beaches surround the monastery on two sides, offering some of the best swimming spots around Lake Ohrid.

Pogradec - THE CITY OF ARTISTS AND THE ENDLESS LAKE
Pogradec is a serene, historical, and cultural city. It’s an ideal destination for romantic souls, having inspired generations of artists with its surrounding natural beauty.
Certain cities possess an undeniable charm. From the moment you step into them, breathe in the fresh air, catch the scent of a nearby water body, and behold its beauty, you realize these places must have inspired great poetry! Pogradec, the city of artists, resting on the shores of Lake Ohrid, is undoubtedly one of these. It’s a perfect haven for the romantic soul, who seeks and cherishes nature’s peace and tranquility.
One of Albania’s most esteemed national poets, Lasgush Poradeci, celebrated Lake Ohrid in many of his works: “Upon the road of autumn’s forest, sleeps the endless lake”. Like the renowned Romantics, Wordsworth, Byron, and Keats, Poradeci’s poetry was inspired and sustained by the magnificent natural beauty surrounding him. He never left Pogradec, and in turn, Pogradec remained with him.
The city of Pogradec is situated on the western shore of Lake Ohrid, which is the heart and soul of this city. Poradeci was not the only one who recognized the value of this beautiful lake. In 1980, UNESCO declared it a Natural Heritage Site, and from 2019 the Albanian part was also included in the list. Ohrid is the deepest (285m) lake in the Balkans, shared between Macedonia (in Ohrid and Struga) and Albania. It took approximately 4 million years for this lake to form its current shape, from the time the soil began to shift on the western side of the Dinaric Alps. Now, it is a truly picturesque swan lake, as well as an ecosystem that includes over 200 species – making it a genuine national treasure.
With an impressive and quite remarkable three hundred sunny days per year, and a warm climate, Pogradec is a prime destination for thousands of Albanian and international tourists. While there are numerous fine gastronomic traditions, the world-renowned delicacy in Pogradec is a golden-skinned, salmon-colored fish called Koran (also known as the Ohrid trout), found only in Lake Ohrid. Any waiter in the area will proudly share the famous story of how Koran even made its way to Buckingham Palace at the request of Queen Elizabeth II, who became such a fan of this unique fish that she had it imported to her residence!
- Lake Ohrid - One of the world’s most fascinating lakes, Lake Ohrid, with its vastness and mystery, is a monumentally captivating attraction. Reflective and dazzling on sunny days, it’s a truly stunning place – especially in and around the ancient town of Ohrid, with its cobbled streets, distinctive architecture, city beach, and lakefront bars.
