Imerovigli - Next, visit Imerovigli, a charming village located north of Santorini, just 2 km from the capital, Fira. It is an extension of Fira and one of the island’s most beautiful balconies. The name Imerovigli is derived from the word “vigla,” meaning view spot.
The village’s location offers a clear view of the caldera, and in ancient times, it allowed villagers to spot approaching pirate ships. Today, Imerovigli is recognized as a traditional settlement. It boasts numerous hotels and traditional houses.
There are also many taverns and cafes with breathtaking views of the caldera. In front of Imerovigli lies a massive rock called Scaros, topped by a castle built in the 13th century but abandoned in the early 1800s.
The castle once housed all the island’s administrative offices. This part of the island collapsed after an earthquake, leaving only the large hill of Scaros today. Imerovigli is home to numerous chapels and churches built on rocks overlooking the blue sea. The village is renowned as the ultimate romantic destination.
-
Firostefani - On the way, make a brief stop in Firostefani to admire the famous Blue Dome Church, the subject of many Santorini postcards.
-
Monastery of Profitis Ilias - The island’s highest point (567 meters) is located between Pyrgos and Kamari. The mountain is named Profitis Ilias (Prophet Elijah), after the monastery at its peak. From this vantage point, enjoy a stunning view of the entire island, from the patchwork agricultural plains to the hilltop village of Oia.
The monastery was built in 1712. The walls surrounding the monastery resemble a fortress. The history of Profitis Ilias is long and significant for Santorini’s life over the centuries. In earlier times, it owned its own ship, conducting private business for the monastery’s benefit while also serving as an intellectual and patriotic influence. From 1806 to 1845, it operated a school teaching Greek language and literature.
The monastery’s decline began in 1860, and buildings suffered serious damage in the 1956 earthquakes. Today, the monastery houses an important collection of icons, bibles, and artifacts of the Greek Orthodox religion, along with ecclesiastical objects, books, and ethnographic material. It also features displays on shoemaking, printing, candle making, winemaking, and typical local food.
- Megalochori - Known for its rich history and local culture, Megalochori dates back to the 17th century, and its well-preserved architecture offers a glimpse into Santorini’s past. The village is also famous for its winemaking heritage, with several historic wineries offering a taste of the island’s finest vintages.
Be sure to explore the hidden alleys, where local artisan shops and cozy cafes await. Don’t miss the iconic church domes and the traditional cave houses carved into volcanic rock, which add to the village’s unique allure.
- Santo Winery - Welcome to Santo Wines Winery, where the essence of Santorini comes alive in every sip. Perched on the breathtaking cliffs of the caldera, this world-renowned winery combines the island’s volcanic heritage with centuries of winemaking tradition to create an unforgettable experience.
Indulge in the iconic flavors of Santorini, including the award-winning Assyrtiko and Vinsanto wines, crafted from hand-picked grapes grown in the island’s unique volcanic soil. What makes Santo Wines truly unforgettable is the view. Imagine sipping your wine as the sun dips below the horizon, painting the caldera with golden hues—a perfect moment to celebrate life, love, and the magic of Santorini.
- Perissa Black Sand Beach - Black Beach is a stunning beach located 15 km southeast of Fira, stretching for 7 km on Santorini’s southeastern side. The beach is characterized by its unique black sand, crystal-clear waters, and various beach facilities. However, the main attraction of the beach and the entire area is the enormous rock called Mesa Vouno that rises from the sea. Visitors are captivated by the breathtaking view of the rock, especially when it glows in the dark. Perissa is a popular tourist resort experiencing a significant influx of visitors starting in the middle of the summer season. The village offers a wide range of hotels to suit all tastes and budgets, along with restaurants, taverns, cafes, and bars. The area is highly developed with modern amenities and quite inviting while maintaining its strong traditional character.
