Mercato Market - Upon arrival, guests will be greeted and transported to their hotel. After refreshing, the sightseeing tour of Addis begins with a drive up Mount Entoto for a stunning panoramic view of the city. The tour continues with a visit to the National Museum, where visitors can see the ancient hominid fossils of ‘Lucy.’ The journey proceeds to the Holy Trinity Cathedral, constructed during WWII, followed by a visit to the Ethnographic Museum, formerly the palace of Emperor Haile Selassie. The day concludes with a trip to Mercato, the largest market in East Africa.
Drive Addis Ababa to Hawassa
Awasa - After breakfast, the journey to Hawassa begins. En route, there is an opportunity to explore Abijatta-Shalla National Park, which spans 887 square kilometers and includes the alkaline lakes Abijatta and Shalla. The park’s diverse habitats feature open grasslands, dry savannas, and arid shrublands dominated by Acacia trees, such as umbrella thorn acacias, red acacias, and gum acacias. Visitors can spot Grant’s gazelles, Common Warthogs, and over 300 bird species, including Common and Somali Ostriches, known for their breeding.
Drive Hawassa to Arba Minch
Arba Minch - After breakfast, guests will visit Lake Hawassa, which is 16 km long and 9 km wide, with a surface area of 129 square kilometers and a maximum depth of 10 meters, situated at an elevation of 1,708 meters. The local Fish Market and bird watching at Amora Gedele are highlights. After lunch, the tour continues to the Dorze people, renowned for their weaving skills, particularly Shammas weaving. Their houses, resembling elephants, are a nod to the area’s historical wildlife. The Dorze are also known for their traditional bamboo huts and Enset “false banana,” a staple food.
Drive Arba Minch - Konso - Turmi
Konso - A boat cruise on Lake Chamo, Ethiopia’s third-largest lake, offers a chance to see crocodiles, hippos, and aquatic birds. The northern shores are famous for large crocodiles basking in the sun. The lake, 32 km long, supports a rich wetland ecosystem. The tour proceeds to Konso village, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its terracing to combat soil erosion from heavy rains. Villages are surrounded by concentric stone walls, primarily basalt boulders. Each town’s age is marked by a generation pole, and family compounds are accessible only through gateways that require visitors to enter on all fours, making potential attackers vulnerable. The village is also known for producing some of the country’s finest coffee.
Drive Turmi - Kangaten (Nyangatom tribe) — Karo tribe - Turmi
Turmi - After breakfast, the tour visits Kangaten (Nyangatom tribe), Karo people, and Hammer people. The women are distinguished by leather skirts adorned with shells, copper bracelets, and heavy iron necklaces, indicating social status. Their hair is styled with ocher and animal fat. Men celebrate victories over enemies or dangerous animals by fixing their hairstyles with clay and decorating them with ostrich feathers. The Hamar people protect their hairstyles by sleeping with a special borkotos chair under their necks. They are also known for the “bull jumping” initiation rite into manhood and their vibrant body adornments and beadwork.
Drive Turmi - Omorate - Turmi - Jinka
Omorate - After breakfast, the drive to Omorate includes crossing the Omo River to visit the Dassanech tribe, followed by a drive to Jinka to meet the Ari Tribes.
Drive Jinka - Mago Park - Jinka and fly to Addis Ababa
Jinka - The tour visits the Mursi village, where Mursi women, like their Surma counterparts, are known for wearing large lip plates. Theories about the plates include deterrence from enslavement, protection from evil spirits, and social status indicators, reflecting the dowry a groom must pay. The Mursi are skilled in scarification, with scars symbolizing social status and achievements. Scars are made using a razor blade and camel thorn, with ash or fly larvae used to create a bulge and prevent infection. The tour concludes with a drive to Jinka airport for a flight back to Addis Ababa, marking the end of the service.
