Into the Heart of the Redwoods

As a family travel writer, I’m always on the lookout for experiences that can captivate both adults and children alike. When I heard about the Redwoods Tour in Orick, I knew it was a must-do for our family. The promise of towering trees, lush greenery, and a chance to learn about the unique ecosystem was too enticing to pass up.

Our adventure began with a visit to the Lady Bird Johnson Grove. The moment we stepped into the grove, we were enveloped by the serene beauty of the ancient redwoods. The kids were immediately fascinated by the sheer size of the trees, and our guide, a Master Naturalist, shared stories that brought the forest to life. We learned about the history of the grove and the vital role these trees play in the ecosystem. It was a perfect blend of education and wonder, and I could see the kids’ imaginations running wild as they tried to picture the world millions of years ago.

A Journey Through Time

Next on our itinerary was the Trillium Falls Hike. This hike took us deeper into the protected forest, where the air was crisp and filled with the scent of pine. The trail was manageable for the kids, and our guide made sure to point out interesting flora and fauna along the way. We even spotted a few deer grazing in the distance, much to the delight of my little ones.

The highlight of the day was undoubtedly Fern Canyon. Equipped with rainboots, we waded through the wet canyon, surrounded by prehistoric ferns. It felt like stepping into a different era, and the kids were thrilled to explore this natural wonder. Our guide’s knowledge of the area’s geological history added depth to the experience, making it both fun and educational.

A Picnic Among Giants

Midway through our adventure, we enjoyed a gourmet picnic lunch amidst the towering redwoods. It was a moment of relaxation and reflection, as we soaked in the beauty of our surroundings. The kids loved the picnic, and it was a great opportunity for us to bond as a family.

Our final stop was the Prairie Creek - Foothill Trail Loop and the Big Tree. Walking among some of the largest redwoods in the park was a humbling experience. The kids were in awe, and I couldn’t help but feel a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to share this moment with them.
