Surfing the Night: A Jungle Adventure in Osa
When the waves rest, the jungle awakens. Join me as I swap my surfboard for a flashlight and explore the nocturnal wonders of Osa with Tracie ‘The Bug Lady’.
Into the Heart of the Jungle
As a seasoned surfer, I’ve spent countless nights under the stars, lulled by the rhythmic crash of waves. But this time, I traded the ocean’s embrace for the dense, mysterious jungle of Osa. My wife and I, always on the hunt for unique adventures, found ourselves drawn to the Drake Bay Night Tour with Tracie “The Bug Lady” and her husband, Gianfranco. The promise of a nocturnal exploration through the rainforest was too tempting to resist.
The night began with a gentle breeze rustling through the leaves, the air thick with the scent of earth and foliage. Tracie and Gianfranco, our guides for the evening, greeted us with warm smiles and an infectious enthusiasm for the creatures of the night. Their passion was palpable, and it wasn’t long before we were swept up in their excitement.
As we ventured deeper into the jungle, the symphony of nocturnal sounds enveloped us. Gianfranco’s sharp eyes and keen hearing were nothing short of miraculous. He could mimic the call of a territorial male frog, and moments later, the tiny amphibian would respond, revealing its location. It was a dance of nature, and we were privileged spectators.
A World Unseen
The jungle at night is a world transformed. With Tracie and Gianfranco leading the way, we discovered a hidden realm teeming with life. From the delicate web-spinning spiders to the elusive kinkajous, each creature had a story, and our guides were master storytellers.
Tracie’s knowledge of the natural world was vast and deep. She shared fascinating tidbits, like the scorpion whose venom is being studied for its potential to treat brain cancer. Her husband, a respected scientist in his own right, had recently published a book on Costa Rican mammals, adding another layer of depth to our journey.
The highlight of the night was undoubtedly the tapir sighting. These gentle giants, often elusive, graced us with their presence, and it felt like a rare gift from the jungle. Tracie and Gianfranco’s ability to locate and identify over 20 different critters was nothing short of extraordinary. Their expertise turned what could have been a simple walk in the dark into an unforgettable adventure.
Memories to Treasure
As the tour came to an end, I found myself reflecting on the magic of the night. Tracie and Gianfranco’s passion for the jungle and its inhabitants was infectious, leaving us with a newfound appreciation for the delicate balance of nature.
Back at our temporary home, I sifted through the photos and videos, each one a testament to the wonders we had witnessed. Tracie and Gianfranco had even sent us a list of all the critters we encountered, complete with additional information and videos. It was a treasure trove of knowledge that I couldn’t wait to share with fellow adventurers and surfers alike.
For those of you who, like me, are always chasing the next wave or the next adventure, the Drake Bay Night Tour is a must. It’s a reminder that the world is full of wonders, waiting to be discovered, if only we take the time to look. So, next time you’re in Costa Rica, take a break from the surf and dive into the heart of the jungle. You won’t regret it.
