Upon arrival, the Daimon gate greets us, marking the transition from the human realm to the spiritual. We then stroll through Danjo Garan, the historic heart of the Shingon Buddhist sect since the 9th century, and visit the Kongobu-ji Temple, established by the military leader Hideyoshi Toyotomi, now serving as an administrative hub.
Our final stop is Oku no In, Japan’s largest cemetery, which is home to the mausoleum of Kobo Daishi and 200,000 graves of those who wished to rest alongside him.
