Begin your journey by driving from Osh to Gulcha along the Pamir Highway, then start cycling up a dirt road. The path follows the Kara Bulak stream towards Tepshi camp, passing by shepherds’ yurts nestled among junipers. Near the top of the climb, leave the road for a trail that ascends the ridge on the left. Here, enjoy lunch while taking in the rugged beauty of the Alay Mountains across the gorge formed by the Gulcha river. At the ridge’s end, descend into Tepshi camp to meet your host for the night. Dinner is provided.
Tepshi Camp – Airy Bell Pass – Sary Oi Camp
Alay Mountains - Distance: 14 km.
Ascent: 613 m; Descent: 1087 m.
After breakfast, start the day by heading up to Airy Bell Pass on a small trail beginning from your yurt. A steep, hour-long ride will lead you to the summit, offering an impressive view of the Kum Bell Mountains to the west. Descend into the Cholo Kaiyng Gorge and pause for lunch. In the gorge, a dirt road follows a small river to Sary Oi camp. Upon arrival at your yurts, join your hosts in the daily activities of nomads. Dinner is served.
Sary Oi Camp to the foot of Ak Tor Pass
Alay Mountains - Distance: 13 km.
Ascent: 1020 m; Descent: 223 m.
After breakfast, the third day begins with a demonstration of milking and making dairy products from horse and cow milk. Following a relaxed morning, descend from Sary Oi summer camp to the river and turn upstream, skirting a steep gorge. Enjoy lunch near a shepherd’s tent with a fresh view of the rugged mountain ridge you descended the previous day. Continue along winding trails through a pine forest towards the foot of Ak Tor Pass. Arrive at a private yurt for dinner.
Ak Tor Pass – Murdash Valley – Uch Chat Camp
Alay Mountains - Distance: 14 km.
Ascent: 757 m; Descent: 1283 m.
After breakfast, cross the river’s headwaters and ride south towards the pass entrance. A short but steep 500-meter ride up brings you to the summit of Ak Tor Pass. On the ascent, admire the sharp rock walls of the Asan Korgon range. At the highest point of your horseback ride, pause for lunch with a view of the majestic Alay mountain ranges. Descend from the pass along a new stream to a final dirt road. Near the day’s end, ride on to Uch Chat summer camp and your host’s yurt. Dinner is provided.
Ak Tor Pass – Murdash Village – Osh City
Alay Mountains - Distance: 18 km.
Ascent: 846 m; Descent: 1515 m.
After breakfast, the final day of riding follows the road to Murdash village. Begin by riding up to Kosh Moinok Pass. Once past the final rise, descend through Murdash valley towards your lunch spot among numerous shepherds’ yurts and shelters. Early in summer, herds of horses, cattle, and sheep graze on the grass beside the road. At summer’s end, locals mow the grass with a scythe. Finally, arrive at the end and drive back to Osh city.
