Join me for a guided tour through the ancient Roman ruins in this historic town. The town’s captivating history is evident in the numerous monuments that, due to their pristine condition, remain a must-see. The town’s origins trace back to the dawn of the 4th century B.C. with the establishment of a fortified camp, or ‘castrum’, towards the end of that century. This military installation, known as Ostia from the Latin for ‘river mouth’, was strategically located about 16 miles from Rome. It served as a military garrison to oversee the access to the River Tiber and its surrounding regions in efforts to fortify Rome.
Over time, a new ring of walls enveloped the city, traditionally accredited to the time of Sulla. These walls confined an urban expanse spanning roughly 50 hectares, with three prominent entrances: Porta Romana, Porta Laurentina, and Porta Marina.
