Grêmio Recreativo Escola de Samba Portela is a prominent association in the Rio de Janeiro Carnival and one of the oldest in the nation, boasting a rich history of over 100 years filled with titles and unforgettable parades, earning it the nickname “The Majesty of Samba.”

Located in the black neighborhood of Madureira, which historically welcomed freed black individuals from the Paraíba Valley, Portela’s history and influence are deeply rooted in the world of samba.

• Quadra Do Salgueiro - On Saturday, the Samba Carioca Route leads to the Salgueiro court in the Greater Tijuca area. Acadêmicos do Salgueiro is a renowned samba school, known for its carnival themes, stories, and African elements. With numerous championships, it stands as one of the most beloved in Rio de Janeiro. The court visit features a pagoda show to kick off the evening, followed by a drum show around midnight, featuring the drum queen, a local celebrity. Throughout the night, professional dancers perform on the school floor, ensuring the best rehearsal for the world’s largest carnival celebration on the samba runway.

Since its inception, Portela has been shaping the tradition of samba and has won 22 titles, making it the most successful Carnival winner in Rio. Duration: 4 hours.

On Saturdays, the experience is held at the Salgueiro court in Andaraí. Salgueiro is a school that celebrates African heritage and originated in a community that was once a Quilombo.
