Additional Information

Your journey to Udong, along the Tonle Sap River, will offer picturesque views of the Cambodian countryside. Expect an approximate drive time of 1 hour and 15 minutes, dependent on traffic conditions. Enjoy the beauty outside through our vehicle’s window seats. Udong, located about 40km to the northwest of Phnom Penh, served as the capital city of Cambodia for 250 years. In 1866, under the influence of French colonials, Phnom Penh was chosen as the new capital and Udong was abandoned. You’ll climb the hill initial ridge from the rear and descend via a stairway of 509 steps. Numerous religious buildings and royal stupas, housing the remains of several illustrious Khmer Kings, are scattered across the hill’s ridge. From Phnom Oudong’s peak, marvel at the stunning views of the expansive countryside, including the serene Kandal Temple nestled amidst plains and paddy fields. You may encounter monkeys on your descent. Roads lead you to meet our bus/van at the hill’s base, which will then take you to the Silversmiths Village.

Amazing Tour, Highly Recommend - Amazing tour guide! Authentic experience, including sampling the local food! We had grilled frog, and visited some small villages in addition to touring the main temple. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable, with first-hand experience of the tragic nature of Cambodian history. He provided informative commentary and helped my friend and I better understand the perspective of the Cambodian people.

Authentic cultural experience to a beautiful, peaceful location - This tour was extremely well organised. Travel was via a comfortable air conditioned van, which picked me up and returned me to my hotel. The tour uses a driver as well as a main guide who walks through the Buddhist centre and up into the temple complex with you. The Buddhist centre is an amazing cultural experience to witness, with both the male monks (dressed in orange) and the female nuns (dressed in white) living there and partaking in daily life. The walk up the mountain to see the pagodas was all well-maintained and the stairs were actually easy to climb as they were so new. I had visited the Banan temple in Battambang a few days earlier and counted about 350 steps to the top of that temple complex. I found the Banan temple complex was harder/more tiring to climb compared to the Udong temple complex, even though the Udong temple complex was more like 450 steps. Just goes to show you how the state of the stairs can make it easier or harder on your body! The complex of pagodas at the top of the mountain was amazing, containing the ashes of the King's great grandfather (I hope I remember this correctly!). There were many locals and local tourists visiting that day, I did not see any other westerners there. The guide was very knowledgeable and explained many things about the Buddhist centre and the temple complex, as well as about daily life in Cambodia. Overall I really enjoyed this tour. It was a lovely way to escape the hustle and bustle of Phnom Penh city. I can understand why locals visit the Buddhist centre and temple complex to relax, worship and meditate. One of the highlight experiences of my trip to Cambodia for sure!

Enchanting Mt Oudong - I was lucky to get a local guide who went up with me and took beautiful photos of me. It was a Monday , without the crowd and I’m glad I managed to climb up in 15 minutes and 3 stops along the way to catch my breath. But the way down was a bit dangerous and exciting with moss on steps. Fortunately, it was a dry season.

The best day, true cultural experience! - Incredible day exploring rural Cambodia. This trip is a must do for anyone wanting a true, authentic experience. Visal Sem, our tour guide took us to Udong, he knew we wanted to see monkeys, he knew exactly where to take us to meet lots of little monkeys! Then he took us to get lunch at a lovely local Cambodian restaurant, the food was delicious! We then went to the temples and got to meet some monks. I've been travelling South East Asia for 5 months, this is my first time in Cambodia, I've experienced some incredible moments through my 5 months travelling and this trip was by far the best experience I've had so far. To get out there and meet real people and to see the Cambodian culture with such an experienced and knowledgeable tour guide was the highlight of our trip. Visal is such a kind, wonderful person who represents the people of Cambodia beautifully. I'm so pleased we choose to take this trip with Visal, these memories will last a lifetime and we plan to come back to Cambodia to take more of his trips in the future. 100% recommend this trip and Visal himself, a credit to tourism in Cambodia and humanity itself. Thank you Visal to welcoming us to Cambodia and for giving us this opportunity to see wonderful places and meet wonderful people.

Strenuous climb - The climb to the top is strenuous and difficult. Once on top, the guide didn’t explain the significance of the site. As I wasn’t feeling well, the guide only stopped at the Buddhist monastery and skipped all the other locations.
