Beware of Unreputable Guides at Ouzoud - We booked a shared excursion with a very reputable company who's communication was great. However we appeared to have been 'farmed off' to a third party supplier who was less than enthusiastic and was clearly working with a 'local guide' at Ouzoud when we arrived. As a regular visitor to Morocco, I know how the system works and this is unfortunately normal, but never the less irritating! What isn't however normal or obligatory is to take any guide. Nobody should EVER feel pressured into going with a guide. Upon getting off the bus, I advised the guide, that having been here 3 times previously I didn't require his services as my husband and I would be doing our own thing... Needles to say the guide took offence as he was trying to sell the tour for 3 euros each, but would then expect a hefty tip - after taking you to 'the best restaurant' for lunch, and getting a commission off that too. Now, I have no objection to anyone making a living and I would have gladly given him a few dirham to get rid of him, but his aggressive manner was unacceptable. Upon doing our own thing and having a lovely time, image the embarrasment of this said guide, then coming to the bus to verbally assault us in front of others. Apparently we are bad people and as such, not welcome in Morocco. Never been treated like this in morocco before, in 20 years! I reported this to the tour company I thought we had booked through and he was lovely about it. I took the bus registration down so that he could speak to the driver and get the name of the guide to report him. I dont know what happened as the owner of the company, unfortunately didn't get back to me, and I would have welcomed knowing. I am writing this to warn others that you do not need a guide anywhere in Morocco and if you feel pressured, you really should report it to the police as the government are really clamping down on this sort of behaviour. Ouzoud, however, was as always lovely, a little more commercialised than the last time, but well, worth a visit. Finally, I don't hold the original tour company responsible personally for the behaviour of the guide, but have said that it is his responsibility to check the third party company is reputable as we booked under his company banner. I hope he took this on board.
