Highlights

Valley of the Whales (Wadi Al-Hitan), Western Desert, Giza, Egypt

Fayoum Oasis - Begin your journey with a pickup from Cairo airport and transfer by air-conditioned car to El Fayoum oasis in the Western Desert. Start your desert adventure with a 4x4 Jeep from Tunis village at Qarun lake, and embark on a desert trip to Wadi El Hitan. Known as ‘Wadi Al Hitan,’ this site is a protected area and a natural heritage site, added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2005. WADI EL-HITAN, also known to scientists as Zeuglodon Valley, was discovered in 1936. Located 35 km west of Wadi El-Ryan, deep in the Western Desert, it is a fossil-rich area considered an open museum. Dating back 45 million years, it contains petrified primitive whale skeletons, shark teeth, shells, and mangrove roots preserved in soft rocks. Everywhere you go, you’ll find petrified sea shells and corals. Visit the Fossil & Climate Change Museum, which hosts a variety of whale fossils and skeletons displayed outdoors. The museum also features fossils, skeletons, fossilized mangroves, and ancient sea shells exhibited indoors in glass cases. Enjoy your lunch, watch the sunset in the desert, then savor a BBQ dinner and stargaze like in Arabian Nights.

Explore Qarun Lake, Wadi El Rayan, Wadi El Hitan, and the Magic Lake.

Wadi El-Rayan - In the morning, after breakfast, visit the Valley of Whales, “Wadi Hitan.” Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in July 2005, it is renowned for its hundreds of fossils of some of the earliest forms of whales. See fossils up to 200 million years old, from when the desert was covered in water. The most notable fossils are the skeletons and bones of whales and sea cows. The whale fossils range from single bones to entire skeletons, with several partial skeletons currently on display in the public part of the park.

Conclude this incredible trip with a visit to Mudawara Mountain, located just a few hundred meters south of Wadi El Rayan Road. More of a rock formation than a true mountain, its layered appearance is striking, with a symmetry that draws your gaze. Afterward, you will be transferred back to your hotel.
