- Panstwowe Muzeum Auschwitz-Birkenau - Discover the history of the largest and most infamous concentration camp in the world. Auschwitz-Birkenau was established and operated by Nazi Germany during World War II in occupied Poland, in the city of Oświęcim. When German forces seized this area in 1939, the first facility they built was for the detention of Polish political prisoners.
Following a directive from the SS headquarters, on April 27, 1940, Heinrich Himmler officially ordered the transformation of the prison into a network of concentration and extermination camps.
The first mass execution of prisoners occurred in September 1941, and soon after, Auschwitz II-Birkenau became the central site of the Nazi’s “Final Solution to the Jewish Question” during the Holocaust. The exact number of people murdered in gas chambers or starved to death is unknown, but historians estimate at least 1.3 million Jews, Poles, Romani, Jehovah’s Witnesses, homosexuals, and tens of thousands of others.
