Experience the unexpected warmth of Oxfordshire this January with outdoor adventures that blend history and nature. From cycling through Oxford’s storied streets to punting along the River Cherwell, discover the region’s charm in a new light.
Discovering Oxford’s Timeless Charm
As the winter sun casts a gentle glow over Oxfordshire, the historic city of Oxford beckons with its rich tapestry of history and culture. The weather, unusually warm for January, provides a perfect backdrop for exploring the city’s outdoor wonders. Begin your journey with the Oxford Bike and Walking Tour, a three-hour excursion that seamlessly blends walking and biking through over a millennium of history. This tour, available on January 11th from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, offers an intimate glimpse into the heart of Oxford, from the iconic University of Oxford to its hidden gems.
The tour is a delightful introduction to the city, as echoed by a recent review from August 2022:
Worth it especially if you have limited time or as an introduction. This was well worth it and our student guide was excellent. Definitely do the combo walking and bike tour. The bikes were not the greatest but were adequate. This tour does not take you inside any of the colleges so be sure to do a separate tour for that. We had limited time. Nice introduction or just time for the highlights. We plan to come back and spend at least 3 days.
With the sun setting at 16:18, there’s ample daylight to soak in the sights and sounds of this historic city. The mild wind and low UV index make it an ideal day for outdoor exploration, allowing you to immerse yourself in the stories and secrets of Oxford’s past.
A Riverside Retreat
On January 12th, as the temperature rises to a balmy 38.2°C, escape the heat with a leisurely Punting Tour along the scenic River Cherwell. This quintessentially English experience is available throughout the day, with tours starting as early as 10:00 AM and continuing until 7:00 PM. As you glide along the river, you’ll be treated to stunning views of Oxford’s lush greenery and historic architecture, including the gardens of Wolfson College and the prestigious Dragon School.
Punting is more than just a mode of transport; it’s a journey through time, offering a unique perspective on the city’s rich heritage. Bring a picnic to enjoy on the boat, and perhaps feed the swans and ducks that call the river home. The gentle breeze and moderate wind speeds provide a refreshing respite from the heat, making it a perfect afternoon activity.
