The most renowned church in Padua is the Basilica di S. Antonio, affectionately known as “Il Santo.” The saint’s remains are housed in a chapel adorned with intricately carved marbles, crafted by various artists, including Sansovino and Falconetto. Construction of the basilica began in 1232, a year after St. Anthony’s passing, and was completed in the following century. In the square in front of the Basilica stands Donatello’s impressive equestrian statue of the Venetian general Erasmo da Narni, known as Gattamelata. This statue, cast in 1453, was the first full-size bronze cast since ancient times.
